Bomber Hunt: Women Among Eta Suspects

ETA, EtarraTwo police officers were killed in an attack on the island of Majorca on Thursday and 64 people were injured in an explosion in the northern city of Burgos the day before.

Both attacks, which happened outside police barracks, have been blamed on the Basque separatist group, which has marked its 50th anniversary.

Spain is now on heightened alert after the atrocities.

The six wanted suspects include two women, who have been named as Itziar Moreno Martinez and Iratxe Ortiz de Barron by the interior ministry.

The others are Alberto Machain Beraza, Ivan Saez de Jauregui Ortigosa, Oroitz Gurruchaga Gogorza and Joanes Larretxea Mendiola.

They are all thought to have crossed into Spain from France in recent days armed with explosives.

Only one of them was previously known to police as a suspected member of the armed group but the others are all thought to be new recruits, it was reported.

Officials have not specified whether they are believed to have played a role in the bombings in Burgos and Majorca.

But posters containing photos of the suspects are being put up at train stations, airports and other public areas, and reports said two of them are thought to be responsible for carrying out the Majorca attack.

Mallorca and BurgosMeanwhile, Spain’s Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, other political leaders and Crown Prince Felipe have paid their respects to the two dead police officers at a funeral mass on the island.

The arrival of the two flag-draped coffins containing the remains of Carlos Saenz de Tejada Garcia, 28, and Diego Salva Lesaun, 27, was greeted with applause at the cathedral.

Mr Zapatero blamed the bombings “on the terrorist group Eta”, saying the attackers “have no chance to hide, they can’t flee, they can’t escape justice.

“They will be detained, they will be sentenced, they will spend their lives in jail.”

The authorities closed all Majorca’s ports and its airport – the third busiest in Spain – for several hours after the bomb detonated, disrupting travel plans for thousands of tourists during the peak holiday season.

Ports on the island have been operating normally but boats were facing tighter controls than usual, a spokesman for the port authority said.

Police have been working on the assumption that those responsible for the bombing had not left the island and were hiding in an apartment “waiting for the situation to cool down”, an official said.
