Armed and masked members of the ‘IRA’ have fired a volley of shots in tribute to veteran Belfast republican Tony ‘TC’ Catney.

It has been claimed the “final salute” was fired from three AK47 assault rifles somewhere in Belfast on Tuesday night.

The 56-year-old republican from west Belfasst died last Saturday after a long illness.

Pictures have emerged showing four men wearing military-style clothing and balaclavas standing over a tribute to the former republican prisoner.

It is understood three of the men fired several shots over a framed picture of the former blanket man, which rested beside a tricolour and a floral tribute spelling out the letters ‘IRA’.

Hundreds of republicans from across Ireland attended his Requiem Mass at St Oliver Plunkett’s Church before making their way to Milltown Cemetery.

A lone piper and eight masked men led the cortege through the graveyard to the republican plot where a minute’s silence was held before a lament was played.

The coffin, which was draped in a tricolour, beret and gloves, was also flanked by dozens of republicans dressed in white shirts and black ties.

An oration written by republican prisoners was delivered by Lurgan republican Paul Duffy in the cemetery republican’s plot.

Several PSNI Land Rover took up position outside the gates of Milltown after the funeral cortege entered the church grounds while several more remained out of sight in a car park a short distance away on the Andersonstown Road.
