Sinn Fein supports case against Gaddafi

Gerry AdamsEVEN Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams has said that he would support compensation for victims of IRA attacks.
Speaking at a press conference outside the party constituency office on the Falls Road, Mr Adams said: “We support victims of IRA actions.”

But he linked compensation for IRA victims to that of people killed by the Army: “All victims deserve compensation. Victims of the IRA and of the British Army. We have no issues with that.”

When asked about the IRA’s involvement in Libya he replied: “The IRA is no longer in the frame.”

The MP said that he had an issue with the “inappropriateness” of the British Government “refusing to stand up to its own record”, claiming: “I am a victim myself.”

Meanwhile, TUV leader Jim Allister called on Prime Minister Gordon Brown to do more than merely delegate Foreign Office staff to give support to the victims battling for compensation.

Mr Allister said: “It was he, in his overriding pursuit of oil and trade, who withheld support when the political leverage was at its most optimum.

“To try and undo that, he needs now at Prime Ministerial level to intervene with Gaddafi, even though, sadly, he has surrendered most of his cards.”

Ulster Unionist leader Sir Reg Empey said that he had written to former Prime Minister Tony Blair in 2002 calling for the Government to press Libya for compensation.

Sir Reg questioned how sincere Gordon Brown was about helping the victims: “The only reason Brown is doing this is because he’s been embarrassed into it.”
