Concerns raised after UVF flags erected in Co Tyrone

CONCERNS have been raised after UVF flags and a Confederate flag were put up in a Co Tyrone hamlet.

It is understood the flags were erected in Newmills by a group of men, who are not believed to be local, last week.

Although a mainly unionist village, in recent years more Catholics have moved in to the area outside Coalisland.

While UVF flags have been put up previously, local sources say more have been erected this year.

It is understood that a Confederate flag, which is linked to white supremacists, has also been put up in the hamlet.

It is believed UVF flags have also been flown in nearby Cookstown ahead of a Twelfth parade in the mixed town next week.

SDLP councillor Malachy Quinn said people in the Newmills area are opposed to the flags.

“Even unionists I have been talking to don’t want it, they are not comfortable with it,” he said.
