A man in his 40s has been shot four times in a paramilitary-style shooting in Derry’s Bogside.

He was hit in both legs at a house in Lisfannon Park on Monday shortly after 10.15pm.

It is understood the man was in a front room of the property when he was targeted.

He was taken to hospital for injuries not believed to be life threatening.

Police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

SDLP Derry city Councillor Sean Carr said people in the area were “very angry” about the attack.

“From what I understand a number of masked men entered the house and shot the man when he was lying on the sofa. I understand there were other people in the house at the time,” Cllr Carr said.

“Last night, people I spoke to in the area were very angry at what had happened on their doorstep. They say those who carried out this attack are not acting in their name, nor do they represent the Bogside or Derry.

“The message from the people of the Bogside to the gunmen is ‘get off our backs’. Whatever perceived accusations there may be against the victim of this horrific shooting, this type of madness cannot be justified, and I urge anyone with information to contact the PSNI immediately.”

Sinn Féin Councillor Colly Kelly said: “There is no place for guns on the streets of our city .This is the third incident in recent weeks .The community does not want this and the people behind them need to stop.”
