Centenario Easter Rising 1916: nuova moneta da 2 euro

Special €2 coin launched to mark 1916 Easter Rising

1916-2016: moneta da 2 euro

Ireland will issue its first ever commemorative €2 coin next year to mark the centenary of the 1916 Easter Rising.

The commemorative coin, which will go into circulation in the New Year, features a depiction of the statue of Hibernia – the historic personification of Ireland – on the roof of Dublin’s General Post Office (GPO).

The coin will also feature the centenary dates, 1916 and 2016, as well as the name Hibernia at the top.

Emmet Mullins, who designed the coin, said the statue of Hibernia has “witnessed the events of 1916 and watched the growth of a nation since the Rising.”

This will be the first time that Ireland has issued its own commemorative €2 coin.

Since 2004, over 100 special €2 commemorative coins have been issued by Eurozone member states as legal tender to mark anniversaries of historical events or draw attention to current events of special importance.

The number of commemorative coins is limited to two per country per year, however Finland, Luxembourg, San Marino and the Vatican City are the only countries to have released at least one every year.

Ireland’s 1916 centenary €2 coin will be available to purchase in a proof set and an annual mint set in January.

The Central Bank of Ireland has also announced it will release silver and gold proof commemorative coins.

These proof coins, designed by Michael Guilfoyle, will be especially for collectors and will not go into circulation.

The coins will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic, which was read by Patrick Pearse outside the GPO on 24 April, 1916.

Mr Guilfoyle said the coin “features a depiction of the statue of Hibernia in front of an arrangement of key words and phrases from the Proclamation of the Irish Republic”.

It is not currently possible to purchase any products from the 2016 coin programme. More information on the coins, details of pricing and dates of availability will be released later this month.
