Violence Erupts During Marches In N Ireland

Riot police in Northern Ireland are tackling protesters who have hurled firebombs, fireworks and rocks in opposition to a Protestant parade.

paradesThe violence broke out in the Catholic district of Ardoyne in north Belfast just over an hour ago.

One female officer has been injured after she was hit on helmet by a rock.

The security forces are trying to clear the way for a parade by about 1,000 Protestants from the Orange Order and their accompanying bands.

Riot police have responded with charges and three water cannons to push back protesters.

Up to 500,000 people are expected to take to the streets of Northern Ireland today as the Orange Order marching season reaches its climax.

In recent years there has been a scaled down security presence at parade flashpoints and better co-operation between the two communities.

The celebration marks the anniversary of the Battle of the Boyne and Protestant King William of Orange’s victory over Catholic King James – 319 years ago.

But the often divisive event is now being marketed as ‘Orangefest’.

Public money has been provided to help sell the event to an international audience and the growing number of tourists visiting Northern Ireland.
