Esplosioni controllate a Lurgan su ordigno da 40 kg

40kg bomb defused in Lurgan alert

A viable device containing over 40 kilograms of explosive has been made safe by army bomb experts attending the scene of a two-day security alert in Lurgan, Co Armagh.

Allarme bomba linea ferroviariaA member of the public spotted the suspicious object under a railway bridge on the Tullydagan Road on Friday morning.

Police said the device, which was in a beer keg, contained in excess of 40 kilograms of homemade explosive material.

A number of controlled explosions were carried out by army bomb experts and the device has now been removed for further forensic testing.

All the residents, who were evacuated during the alert, have been allowed to return home.

The railway line between Portadown and Lisburn, which remained closed overnight, has now re-opened.

“Rail services are now operating as normal though some delays may be experienced for a while”, Translink confirmed on Saturday.

A PSNI spokeswoman said the no-warning device had the potential to cause serious destruction and injury.

Area Commander Chief Inspector Jason Murphy described the incident as “unacceptable”.

“Once again a community has been disrupted and the lives of residents put at risk by cowardly elements intent on causing as much destruction as they can”.

“No warning was given about the device and it is sheer good fortune that an alert individual came across it and reported it to police before the device detonated.”

Police have appealed for anyone with information about the incident to contact them in Newry.
