Giovani di Forkhill rimandati in custodia

Forkhill teenagers remanded on bomb-making charges

Polizia | PSNI | Police
Two teenagers from Forkhill have been remanded on explosive charges linked to items seized by police during a raid of a house on Tievecrom Road, Forkhill.

Keith McConnan (19) and 18-year-old Orla O’Hanlon appeared before Newry Magistrates Court on Saturday morning accused of making and possessing explosives with intent to endanger life or property.

The court heard that a substance identified as ammonium nitrate, which police say is used in home-made explosives, an industrial size grinder and other items including a timer power unit and latex gloves were found during a search of the property on Wednesday. The pair were arrested and McConnan was taken to Antrim police station for questioning.

A detective told the court that Mr McConnan made no replies to questions from police while, during initial interviews, Ms O’Hanlon spoke openly to detectives about family and home life.

However, when she was asked about the items recovered in the house, she refused to comment, except to say that the industrial coffee grinder was used to grind down flour.

The judge remanded the teenagers in custody to Hydebank Wood Young Offenders Centre in Belfast.

They are due back in Newry Magistrates Court via video link on 8th January 2014.
