La polizia rimanda lo smantellamento di unità anti joyriding a West Belfast

Police U-turn over car crime unit

NORTHERN Ireland’s only dedicated car crime police team is to be retained until the end of the year.

Families Bereaved through car crimeThe reprieve will allow further discussion with members of the local community in west Belfast.

The decision follows protests from victims’ group, Families Bereaved through car crime, who said they fear more people could be killed by ‘joyriders’.

Last week, police said Auto Crime Unit members would be moved to other duties.

In a statement, the PSNI in west Belfast revealed that they “have taken a wide range of community views on board and following further consideration, have taken the decision to retain the Autocrime team until at least 31st December 2010”.

They said this would allow for a fuller review of the role of this unit, and allow them, in conjunction with the community, to look at the best way to tackle their priorities.

SDLP MLA Alex Attwood welcomed the PSNI’s revised decision.

Describing the move as “positive”, the West Belfast representative said: “The Auto Crime Unit always had a particular significance. It demonstrated a police commitment to tackle death driving and acted as a bridge between the police and the community not expressed before.

“It’s continuation at least for six months is the right way to go.”
