“Marcia per la Verità” sul Massacro di Ballymurphy

Hundreds attend Ballymurphy march

Hundreds of people took part in a parade through west Belfast on Sunday, ahead of the 40th anniversary of the Ballymurphy shootings.

The ‘March for Truth’ was attended by politicians and the families of the 11 people killed by the Parachute Regiment in 1971.

They are calling for an independent international investigation to be held into the atrocity.

John Teggart, whose father Danny was a victim, said: “This march is to highlight that it’s 40 years and we still haven’t got an investigation.

“It’s important to the families. They were all murdered. They were all neighbours, all out in the street helping other people.”

A catholic priest and a mother of eight were amongst those who died when troops moved into west Belfast between Monday 9 and Wednesday 11 August.

The Army claimed it opened fire after being shot upon by republicans, as it acted to round up suspected paramilitaries after internment was introduced.

However the families of those killed have always maintained their innocence.

It has been claimed the soldiers responsible for Bloody Sunday were the same that opened fire in Ballymurphy – some of the Bloody Sunday families turned out to support Sunday’s rally.

Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams, who was at the event alongside representatives from the SDLP, said the Ballymurphy families are entitled to a full investigation.

“The families want an investigation into the events around these killings,” Mr Adams said.

“They should be given that entitlement.”

Secretary of State Owen Paterson met with the Ballymurphy families last year. He has encouraged them to work with the Historical Enquiries Team.

Mr Adams continued: “I have met with successive secretaries of state with the families – they know the story inside out.

“I believe the British government know the truth of what happened and that there were lies told.”

Meanwhile the families say nothing less than an investigation, a statement of innocence and an apology from the government will do.
