Messa in ricordo dei soldati uccisi a Massereene Barracks

Memorial held at Massereene barracks

Massereene Barracks, AntrimOver 100 people have attended a cross community service at Massereene barracks in Antrim on the first anniversary of the murders of two British soldiers.

Members of the British Legion laid wreaths and others left flowers outside the barrack’s entrance where the shooting happened.

A private service was also held inside the base attended by relatives and members of the 38 Engineer Regiment.

Detectives investigating the murders have renewed their appeal for information.

Sappers Patrick Azimkar, 21, from London, and 23-year-old Mark Quinsey, from Birmingham were collecting a pizza delivery at the gates when two gunmen walked across the road and opened fire.

They were hours from deploying to Afghanistan and were already dressed in desert fatigues ready to board a flight.

Two pizza delivery men and two other military personnel were seriously injured in the attack.

Two men have been charged with the two murders and attempted murders. 13 others have also been arrested and questioned in connection with the attack in the last 12 months.

PSNI Detective Superintendent Peter Farrar said their investigation remained active and ongoing and said he believed there were more people in the community who could have information that could help his team and appealed to them to come forward.

‘One year on since this atrocity, Mark and Patrick’s families still feel a tremendous amount of grief. We can only hope that in time, that grief will ease,’ he said.

Two days after the sappers’ murders, a policeman Constable Stephen Carroll was shot dead by the Continuity IRA in Craigavon, Co Armagh.
