Police service at ‘breaking point’

Derry, Strand RoadPOLICE Federation chairman Terry Spence has warned the PSNI is at “breaking point” after yet another attempt was made by dissident republicans to take an officer’s life.
On Saturday a viable device, found under the car of a female Catholic officer living in Kilkeel, was made safe by army technical officers.

Police have condemned the attempted under car booby-trap bomb as “a cowardly and callous act”.

The car belonged to the niece of independent republican councillor Martin Connolly, who declined to condemn the attack, saying he “did not want to get into the politics of condemnation”.

His comments were slammed by DUP MLA Jim Wells who asked: “How could anyone refuse to condemn an attack on one of his own relatives?”

Mr Spence added: “It is of major concern to us that the threat level is increasing all the time. It is at the worst level since the signing of the Good Friday Agreement.”

The attack on the Kilkeel officer came days after a car bomb exploded outside Strand Road police station in Londonderry. Oglaigh na hEireann claimed it was behind the attack.

It is thought that dissidents were also behind a failed attack to murder a soldier in a booby-trap car bomb attack in Bangor on Wednesday.

He had been taking his car out of the driveway when he heard something fall off the underside of the vehicle and saw a bomb lying in the road.
