Female PSNI officer injured by brick

A female police officer has been injured after being hit on the back of the head with a brick in Newtownabbey.

Auto della polizia | PSNI car | Police carThe incident happened as neighbourhood officers responded to a report of youths causing annoyance in the Glenabbey Drive area at about 4pm on Wednesday.

When officers attended, a number of youths made off and the female officer was struck by the brick which was thrown from the area of the viaduct. Her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Area Commander Chief Inspector Paula Hilman said: “Neighbourhood officers have been working with the local community and our partner agencies tirelessly to tackle issues and concerns in the area.

“Today they responded to a report from the local community and an officer has been hurt as she tried to resolve the situation.

“This is unacceptable.”

Chief Insp Hilman asked anyone with information to contact police.

“I would also ask for the continued support of the community in tackling this type of behaviour and helping us address antisocial behaviour,” she added.
