Nuova ala per ergastolani a Maghaberry

Maghaberry Prison opens new unit for life inmates

A new £12.2m unit for life-sentence inmates has opened at Maghaberry Prison in County Antrim.

The 120 bed facility, named Braid House, is part of a government scheme announced just over two years ago to create 400 extra prison places.

Prisons’ Minister Paul Goggins said that almost 300 of those places were now built and in use.

Last July, a report by the prisons’ inspector said Maghaberry was one of the worst prisons in the UK.

The report by Criminal Justice Inspection NI and Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Prisons said it was one of three jails out of 169 inspected which was particularly poor in the area of safety.

It said the jail failed to meet standards in all four of the internationally recognised tests for prisoner welfare.
