New face of hope on peace wall

A NEW Belfast mural marks a “significant step forward in transforming an iconic landmark of the Troubles into a symbol of positive expression”, it has been claimed.

Tony Kennedy, Nelson McCausland, Kevin KillenA sculptural metal panel on the peace wall which divides the Shankill Road from the Falls Road at Cupar Way was unveiled yesterday by Culture Minister Nelson McCausland.

The artwork, called The Face, was designed by young people from the Greater Shankill area and created by local artist Kevin Killen.
The initiative is part of the Re-imaging Communities programme, funded by the Arts Council.

Chief executive of the Arts Council Roisin McDonough said: “The Re-imaging communities programme is committed to building a shared future for Northern Ireland that is founded on partnership, equality and mutual respect.

“This new artwork replaces over 8ft of graffiti and marks another significant step forward in transforming an iconic landmark of the Troubles into a symbol of positive expression for the residents of the Greater Shankill.”
