Parata a Coleraine passa senza problemi

Rerouted parade passes peacefully

An Orange band parade in Coleraine, which was voluntarily rerouted to avoid the scene of a killing, passed off without incident on Wednesday night.

Kevin McDaidThe Orange Order changed the parade route to avoid the spot where Catholic man Kevin McDaid was beaten to death by a loyalist mob in May.

The band also stopped playing for a short time.

It is the third band parade to have taken place in the area where Mr McDaid was killed since his death.

The PSNI’s area commander for Coleraine, Chief Inspector Nicky Thompson, said: “I would like to thank the organisers, public representatives, and local residents for the work they have done to ensure there was a successful outcome to this evening’s parade.

“I would also remind event organisers of the importance of entering into discussions with all interested parties at an early stage, as it provides an opportunity to gain a better understanding of people’s concerns, and time to find a solution that accommodates everyone.

“I am encouraged by recent developments, and would urge all communities to maintain regular contact and to work with us, and together, to further reduce tensions, and promote community harmony.”
