Injured officer Peadar Heffron ‘regains consciousness’
A police officer who was critically injured by a dissident republican car bomb earlier this month has regained consciousness in hospital.
Constable Peadar Heffron’s right leg was amputated just days after the bomb exploded under his car in Randalstown on 8 January.
The 33-year-old Catholic is an Irish language specialist for the PSNI and is also the captain of its GAA team.
A police spokeswoman said he remains in a critical but stable condition.
Constable Heffron has been a PSNI officer for 10 years and was recently married.
He had been on his way to work at Woodbourne police station in west Belfast and it is believed he had driven about a mile from his home when the bomb exploded on the Milltown Road.
A detective investigating the bombing said they were not ruling out a link to a car bomb attack on a police officer’s partner in east Belfast last year.
