Police have confirmed an under-car explosion in west Belfast was caused by a pipe bomb.

The parked vehicle was extensively damaged in the incident which happened at St James’s Road just after midnight on Wednesday.

Army bomb experts examined the scene and have taken remnants of the device as well as the car away for further forensic examination.

St James’s Road has reopened and residents have been allowed to return to their homes which were evacuated during the alert.

PSNI Inspector James Murphy commented: “Thankfully no-one was injured in this incident but severe disruption has been caused in the area.

“I would like to thank the residents for their patience whilst the operation was ongoing and I would appeal to anyone who noticed any suspicious activity in the area to contact detectives at Musgrave on 101.

“Information can also be passed anonymously through the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

Local MP Paul Maskey has condemned those responsible for the incident and urged them to stop and let people in the area “get on with their lives in peace.”

The Sinn Féin politician added: “Thankfully no one has been injured in this attack.

“This incident has brought nothing but disruption to the local area and must be condemned.”

He commended local community group St James’s Forum for opening up their premises to accommodate residents.
