Pipe bomb ritrovata a Derry. Evacuate 30 abitazioni

‘Pipe bomb’ found in Londonderry security alert

A suspicious object discovered in a car in Londonderry has been described by police as “a crude but viable pipe bomb-type device”.

PSNI logoIt was found in a car parked in the Cromore Gardens area of the city on Sunday night.

Up to 30 houses were evacuated while army technical officers examined the object.

The police cordon was lifted early on Monday and residents allowed to return to their homes.

Reports suggested the object had been thrown into the car, however the circumstances of the incident are still being established.

Missiles including bricks and fireworks were thrown at police at the scene.

Sinn Fein councillor Kevin Campbell said the attack showed a “total disregard” for the local community.

“It is an absolute disgrace that 30 families were forced to leave their homes because of this incident.

“I would call upon anyone involved in this type of activity to desist.”

A 17-year-old male was charged with offences connected to disorderly behaviour and breaching a cordon.

He is expected to appear in court at a later date.
