Progressive Unionist Party chiede un “quartiere orangista”

PUP calls for ‘Orange quarter’

The Progressive Unionist Party has called for the creation of an Orange quarter in Belfast, suggesting the Shankill Road as a possible location.

Presentazione manifesto del PUP | PUP manifestoThe party’s election manifesto – launched on Thursday – laid out the plans to “promote and educate” people about Orange history and culture.

“The Orange Order, our unique marching band culture, the Somme and the Ulster Scots language would feature prominently in an area rich with wall murals, museums and regular parades and events,” the manifesto suggests.

The PUP, led by Brian Ervine, has also backed the retention of Stormont’s full quota of 108 MLAs.

Some parties have suggested the number should be reduced, by the PUP believes “an Assembly with only two or three smaller parties would not be in the best interests of the people of Northern Ireland”.

The Progressive Unionists are standing the smallest number of candidates in the Assembly election, with just leader Brian Ervine contesting a seat in the East Belfast constituency.
