Repubblicani rivendicano attacco armato a Gortnaghey

North Derry Republicans’ claim gun attack in Gortnaghey

North Derry Republicans say they are behind a gun attack near Dungiven on Wednesday night.

In a statement to the ‘Journal’ on Thursday, using a codeword, the group said they went to a house in Gortnaghey, some three miles from Dungiven, at around 8pm. A spokesperson said they fired a number of shots in the air outside a house.

The spokesperson said four masked men were involved in the attack and said it was to target individuals they alleged were involved in anti social behaviour, and who had been “abusing the community” in recent months.

The spokesperson said Wednesday night’s attack was “only a warning”, and said “next time we won’t be knocking on the door”.

The group also called on those responsible for planting bombs in the Dungiven area during November and December 2015 to say who they are and why they are doing it.

Sinn Fein councillor Sean McGlinchey said he was not aware of the incident.

“There’s enough issues in the community at the moment without this type of stuff,” said Colr. McGlinchey. “It’s not needed, and it’s not wanted. People are more concerned about getting sports facilities for the community.”
