Jesse Jackson in NI visit

American civil rights campaigner Reverend Jesse Jackson is in Northern Ireland to attend a series of engagements in Belfast and Londonderry.

Jesse JacksonOn Saturday afternoon, Rev Jesse Jackson met supporters and young boxers from Belfast’s oldest boxing club, St George’s.

He will also be at the old Convent of Mercy School.

Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey said: “I am delighted to be welcoming to south Belfast the legendary American civil rights leader the Rev Jesse Jackson. He has been a great ambassador for the Irish peace process and an inspiration to those who struggle for justice and equality across the world.

Mr Maskey described the Baptist minister as “one of the most important figures of our age.”

Rev Jesse Jackson was present on the Memphis balcony with the Martin Luther King when Dr. King was assassinated in 1968.

He was a candidate for the US Democratic presidential nomination in 1984 and 1988.

Survivors group Relatives for Justice also arranged for the campaigner to meet victims of the Troubles from both communities.

On Sunday, Rev Jesse Jackson will be in Derry for another day of engagements, including one at the Pat Finucane Centre.
