SDLP reshuffles Assembly team
The SDLP today announced a wide-ranging reshuffle of its Assembly team.
Mark Durkan is to step down as chairman of the Assembly’s Enterprise, Trade and Investment (ETI) committee to concentrate on his duties as leader of the party and Foyle MP.
“This reshuffle will refresh and renew our team as we move forward towards the next phase of devolution,” he said.
Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie stays in post but is stepping down as a councillor at Down District Council after 24 years. Maria McCarthy, 25, is being co-opted as her replacement. Assembly members Pat Ramsey and Alban Maginness are expected to relinquish councillor positions.
Dolores Kelly replaces Patsy McGlone as chair of Stormont’s Environment Committee.
Mr Durkan added: “The SDLP is proud of our record in government through our minister Margaret Ritchie.
“Our Assembly team has acquitted itself with distinction since restoration, acting with diligence and determination both on the chamber floor and in the committees.”
A series of committee changes included:
- Mr Ramsey replaces Alex Attwood on Employment and Learning.
- Mr McGlone replaces PJ Bradley at Agriculture and Rural Development.
- Tommy Gallagher takes over from John Dallat at Regional Development.
- John Dallat replaces Tommy Gallagher at Environment.
- Alex Attwood replaces Ms Kelly at OFMDFM.
- PJ Bradley replaces Mr Ramsey at Culture, Arts and Leisure.
- Mary Bradley takes over from Alban Maginness on Social Development.
- Mr Durkan is replaced by Mr Maginness at Enterprise, Trade and Investment.
Mr Ramsey is now Assembly group whip.
Mr Durkan thanked the committee staff and fellow members for their hard work during his two years at the helm.
“My decision is in line with clear and consistent SDLP policy on reducing and moving to end dual mandates,” he added.
