DUP’s Sandy Gilkinson is new Mayor

Sandy GilkinsonSKERRIES councillor, Sandy Gilkinson is the new Mayor of Coleraine.
At Monday night’s Annual General Meeting of Coleraine Borough Council, the DUP man was voted in as the first citizen of the Borough.
UUP councillor William King MBE, is his Deputy.
Outgoing Mayor, councillor David Barbour handed over the title to councillor Gilkinson and wished him all the best for his year in office.

Reflecting on his busy year as Mayor, councillor Barbour, paid tribute to his Deputy Mayor, councillor William Creelman, and added: “This has been an exhilarating year, and I wish to thank all who have supported me in this role.

“It is an important role as representative and I thank everyone for their support, their willingness and appreciation.”
Councillor Barbour spoke about the many events he had attended in his year and said that he had enjoyed inviting members of the community to the Mayor’s Parlour, as well as representing Council at the many formal functions.

Councillor Barbour was congratulated by members.
In his first speech as Mayor, councillor Gilkinson added: “I wish to thank the outgoing Mayor and Deputy Mayor for their year, and what they have achieved.

“I also wish to thank my own party for their vote.
“It is a privilege to sit here as Mayor, as I take my responsibility seriously, and will actively represent everyone in the community, not forgetting those in my own constituency the skerries.

” I will carry out my duties to the best of my ability and on behalf of the whole community. “I recognise the downturn in jobs and employment in our Borough, and wish to improve this along with the community relations while working together with everyone”.
