Seconda notte di disordini a Short Strand

Second night of city disturbances

Three people have been arrested after a second night of disturbances in east Belfast on Tuesday.

Short Strand, East BelfastA number of petrol bombs and other missiles were thrown at police at the Albertbridge Road and Mountpottinger interface.

The people were arrested for riotous behaviour, possession of a petrol bomb and disorderly behaviour.

One officer received an injury to his face. Police said calm was restored by 0230 BST on Wednesday.

On Monday night, up to 200 people assembled in the area after a Sinn Fein event to mark the closure of Mountpottinger Police Station.

Police officers fired plastic baton rounds to break up the trouble between groups of nationalist and loyalist youths.

Area Commander Chief Inspector John McKeagh condemned the second night of disturbances.

“Although the disturbances were on a much less scale that the night before, this behaviour is still totally unacceptable,” he said.

“Local residents deserve to live in peace and I can assure the community that we are continuing to work to bring those responsible before the courts at the earliest opportunity.

“A team of dedicated officers has been set up to achieve this and I am confident that further arrest will be made over the next few days.

“I would also urge local community and elected representatives to assist police in their efforts to dissuade this unacceptable behaviour.”
