‘Real IRA’ training camp accused granted bail

A second Co Tyrone man accused of attending a ‘Real IRA’ training camp which had been under security force surveillance was granted bail on Tuesday.

Processo senza giuria | Non-jury trialTerence Aidan Coney joins his 36-year-old brother Gavin, who was freed on bail last week after his wife’s parents put up the deeds to their home as surety to help secure his release.

Terence Coney, from Malabhui, Carrickmore, along with his brother, is among four people facing charges arising out of the discovery of a firing range at Formil Wood, Co Tyrone, in March last year.

At his brother’s bail hearing last week, it was claimed the camp was in the advanced stage of preparations for a terrorist attack on police or the public. He faces charges linked to his legally held .22 Walter rifle.

He is accused of possessing the rifle and a quantity of ammunition with intent to endanger life and having them in suspicious circumstances. It is alleged the weapon was used to shoot balloons on the makeshift forest firing range which had been under surveillance by security forces for months.

His 35-year-old brother Terence, is accused of possessing the same rifle and .22 ammunition on March 31, 2012, when he also allegedly “attended at a place used for terrorist training, namely, Formil Wood, Gorticashel Road, Omagh”. Coney also denies having articles for use in terrorism, namely four pairs of training shoes.

Belfast Recorder Judge David McFarland said that in the circumstances he believed that Coney was in the same category as his brother, and he would grant him bail on the same terms and conditions.

Last week Belfast Crown Court heard that Gavin Coney’s parents-in-law were prepared to put up the deeds to their home and outbuildings at Gorticashel Road, valued at £140,000, in lieu of a £20,000 surety. The same surety applies to his younger brother, who was ordered to surrender his Irish passport, sign bail with police three times a week, and while on a 10pm curfew each evening, he will also be electronically tagged.
