Officers injured in west Belfast bomb attack

Three police officers are recovering after being injured in a bomb blast in west Belfast.

PSNI logoThe device was thrown at the officers as they were attending reports of a robbery at a bookmakers on the Shaws Road at around 9pm on Friday.

Two were taken to hospital – one has has since been discharged, while another with serious arm injuries is expected to under surgery on Saturday.

A third officer who was caught up in the attack was treated for shock.

Acting Chairman of the Policing Board Brian Rea has condemned the incident.

“Actions like this will not deter the police, and others who work with police, from continuing to do their best to provide good policing and a safer environment for the people of West Belfast.”

Sinn Fein MLA Paul Maskey has said it is fortunate that more people were not injured.

“There are alot of shops and eating places, it’s a residential area and there’s a GAA club. We’re very lucky that there are not more injuries than there are.”

DUP MLA and Policing Board member Jonathan Bell said that “the bombers’ actions were unjustified and unjustifiable.”

While SDLP assemblyman Alex Attwood has also strongly condemned the attack: “I think the community is in some state of shock.

“This is utterly unwelcome and unrepresentative of the people in this area.”

Those feelings of revulsion are echoed by Alliance MLA Trevor Lunn: “It is deeply troubling to think that these individuals have attacked people who were protecting the community in responding to a robbery.

“The community is disgusted at these evil elements who deal in fear and violence.”
