West Belfast: uomo accusato per ritrovamento bomba di mortaio

MAN CHARGED OVER WEST BELFAST MORTAR BOMB FIND

Belfast, Shaws Road

DETECTIVES from the PSNI’s Terrorist Investigation Unit have charged a 22 year old man with possession of explosives with intent to endanger life on Thursday 27 March 2014.

The man was arrested in the Shaw’s Road area around 11pm on Thursday evening.

A holdall with an improvised explosive device (IED) was seized following an undercover intelligence-led surveillance operation

Commenting on the seizure Area Commander for West Belfast, Chief Inspector Anthony McNally said “We know only too well the death and destruction such devices can cause and there is no doubt that the intention of those behind this device was an attempt to kill police officers who serve this community on a daily basis.

“Their intended actions can only be described as ruthless and mindless and show total disregard for the people in this community. This discovery has undoubtedly saved lives or serious injury.

“I commend all of the officers involved in this investigation and I would encourage the community to continue to work with us to keep everyone safe.”

During a follow up search operation in the Lenadoon Avenue area, police discovered a viable pipe bomb device and a quantity of ammunition.

These items have been taken away for forensic examination.

The 22 year old is due to appear at Belfast Magistrates Court on Monday 31 March.

As is normal procedure the charges will be reviewed by the PPS.

Police continue to appeal for anyone with information to contact them on the new non-emergency number 101 or anonymously through the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
