Adams criticises Queen’s ‘premature’ visit

Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams has called the Queen’s visit to Ireland “premature”.

Regina Elisabetta | Queen ElizabethQueen Elizabeth is due to arrive in Dublin on Tuesday, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, in the first official trip by a British monarch to the Republic of Ireland.

Mr Adams commented following a newspaper article which suggested his party were welcoming the Queen’s visit.

“This is a premature visit in our view; we’ve set our position out very, very clearly.”

Mr Adams also said the Royal visit was a unique opportunity for Ireland and Britain to build a new relationship, based on equality.

“We’ve also, in that article, set out our desire to see an entirely new relationship with this island, because the island is still partitioned,” he said.

“Regardless of all the progress that has been made, that’s an awful law.”

During the four day visit, the Queen will go to some places many thought not possible just a few years ago, including Croke Park – home of the GAA.

Due to the heightened security situation north of the border, more than 8,000 gardai will be on patrol, in what is thought to be one of the biggest security operations in the Republic of Ireland.

It has been reported armed soldiers from the UK will also comprise part of the security setup.
The Irish Government said it welcomed the imminent trip, but some protests are also expected to take place.
