Il colonnello dell’esercito in pensione è stato ucciso durante una rapina nella casa del figlio a Nairobi in Kenya
L’attacco è avvenuto dopo che uomini armati hanno fatto irruzione nel sobborgo Langata.
Una dichiarazione della famiglia descrive il Colonnello Loden come un “devoto padre di famiglia” e afferma che la sua morte è stata una “brutale tragedia”.
Il corrispondente BBC per l’Africa orientale, Gabriel Gatehouse, ha detto che l’ex militare è morto durante il trasferimento in ospedale.
Esonerato
Ex colonnello del Reggimento Paracadutisti, il Colonnello Loden partecipò a numerose operazioni in tutto il mondo e fu insignito della croce di guerra per il servizio ad Aden nel 1967.
Nel 1972 era al comando di una unità Reggimento Paracadutisti che esplose più di 100 colpi durante la marcia per i diritti civili a Derry.
Tredici civili furono uccisi sul posto e una quattordicesima vittima morì 5 mesi più tardi per le ferite riportate.
Il Colonnello Loden è stato esonerato dall’inchiesta Saville sulle uccisioni, perché il militare non aveva capito che i suoi soldati stavano sparando a persone che non rappresentavano una minaccia.
Ha lasciato l’esercito nel 1992, e dopo aver seguito una carriera nella gestione aziendale, si ritirò a perseguire il suo amore per la vela nel 1999, comunica la sua famiglia.
La dichiarazione aggiunge: “Edward, sposato con Jill, padre di Jamie e Will, era un devoto padre di famiglia e nonno orgoglioso di Oliver, Amelia, Giosuè, Harry ed Emily.
“Jill e i suoi figli vogliono dire grazie a tutti per i messaggi travolgenti d’amore e il sostegno di amici e familiari, e chiedono tempo affinché la famiglia possa fare i conti con questa brutale tragedia”.
Ad agosto ci fu l’omicidio di un altro ex colonnello dell’esercito britannico, Dadid Parkinson, colpito a morte da una banda armata nella sua casa vicino a Nanyuki, Laikipia.
Il colonnellol Parkinson, ex-comandante di una base nella zona, e la moglie sono stati attaccati dopo che una banda di rapinatori, armati di machete e una pistola, sono penetrati in casa.
La signora Parkinson trovò rifugio in una camera blindata.

Army colonel Edward Loden killed in Kenya
A retired British army colonel has been shot and killed during a robbery at his son’s home in Nairobi, Kenya.
Edward Loden, who commanded the unit involved in the Bloody Sunday shootings in Northern Ireland, was on holiday when he was shot on Saturday evening.
The attack happened after armed men forced their way into the compound in the Langata suburb.
A family statement described Col Loden as a “devoted family man” and said his death was a “brutal tragedy”.
The BBC’s East Africa correspondent Gabriel Gatehouse said he died on the way to hospital.
Exonerated
A former colonel in the Parachute Regiment, Col Loden served on numerous operations around the world and was awarded the Military Cross for service in Aden in 1967.
In 1972, he was in command of a Parachute Regiment unit that fired more than 100 shots during a civil rights march in Londonderry.
Thirteen civilians were killed at the scene and a 14th victim died from his wounds five months later.
Col Loden was exonerated by the Saville Inquiry into the killings, which said that he did not realise his soldiers might be firing at people who did not pose a threat.
He retired from the Army in 1992, and after following a career in business management, retired to pursue his love of sailing in 1999, his family said.
The statement added: “Edward, married to Jill, father of Jamie and Will, was a devoted family man and proud grandfather of Oliver, Amelia, Joshua, Harry and Emily.
“Jill and her sons would like to say thank you to all the overwhelming messages of love and support from wider friends and family, and request that the family be given time to come to terms with this brutal tragedy.”
The killing comes after the murder of another former British army colonel, David Parkinson, who was killed by an armed gang at his home near Nanyuki, Laikipia, in August.
Col Parkinson, an ex-commander of a base in the area, and his wife were attacked after a gang of suspected robbers, armed with machetes and a gun, smashed their way into the house.
Mrs Parkinson escaped after hiding in a strong room.
