Giochi olimpici del 2012 minacciati dai repubblicani

I repubblicani sono una nuova minaccia ai giochi olimpici 2012, afferma il ministro per le Olimpiadi Hugh Robertson

Il livello di minaccia durante Londra 2012 dovrebbe attestarsi a “grave” ma una revisione condotta dal miistro per la Sicurezza, la Baronessa Neville-Jones, ritiene sia necessaria “una lagra comprensione delle dinamiche” per redigere il piano della sicurezza.

Tra il 1993 ed il 1994 la baronessa Neville-Jones fu la presidente del Joint Intelligence Committee.

Robertson afferma che il piano sicurezza per i giochi olimpici era appropriato per i cambiamenti della minaccia che sono stati presi in considerazione.

Afferma il ministro: “Due anni fa, o meglio 18 mesi fa, nessuno vide l’incremento del repubblicanesimo che stiamo osservando in Irlanda.

“E’ una minaccia ai Giochi”.

Aggiunge: “Adesso comprendiamo meglio ciò che viene richiesto precisamente per tenere in sicurezza i Giochi rispetto a quanto deciso 18 mesi fa”.

Il budget per la sicurezza olimpica, fissato nel 2007, è di 750 milioni di euro (600 milioni di sterline) ma i funzionari credono che continuando i risparmi in atto potrebbero essere utilizzati solo 600 milioni di euro circa.

La responsabilità per la sicurezza della manifestazione è divista tra il comitato Londra 2012 ed il governo britannico.

Il progetto Olimpico resta ancora all’interno del budget stanziato di 11 miliardi di euro (9,3 miliardi di sterline).

Il Tesoro britannico sta attualmente valutando una richiesta di finanziamento aggiuntivo proveniente dal Chief Constable della PSNI Matt Baggott, che chiede di accedere al Contingency Fund (Fondo per le Emergenze) per incrementare il budget a disposizione della polizia per i prossimi quattro anni, per contrastare la minaccia presente in Irlanda del Nord.

Il ministro della Giustizia di Stormont David Ford ha appoggiato la richiesta.

Dissidents are ‘threat to 2012 Games’

Dissident republicans are a new threat to the London 2012 Games, Olympics Minister Hugh Robertson has said.

The threat level during London 2012 is expected to be at “severe” but a review spearheaded by Security Minister Baroness Neville-Jones means there is “a wider understanding of the dynamics” needed for security planning.

Between 1993 and 1994 Baroness Neville-Jones was chairman of the Joint Intelligence Committee.

Mr Robertson said security planning for the Games was appropriate for the changing types of threat that have to be considered.

He noted: “Two years ago, probably 18 months out, nobody saw the rise of dissident republicanism that we are probably facing in Ireland.

“It is a threat to the Games.”

He added: “We have much better appreciation now of precisely what is required to keep these Games secure than we did 18 months ago.”

The Olympic safety and security budget, set in 2007, remains at £600m but officials feel that continuing savings could see £475m of that being used.

The £9.3bn Olympic project still remains in budget.

Responsibility for venue security is split between London 2012 and the Government.

The Treasury is currently considering a bid from PSNI Chief Constable Matt Baggott for more money from the Contingency Fund to supplement the region’s police budget over the next four years in order to deal with the threat in Northern Ireland.

Stormont justice minister David Ford has backed the call.
