Il discorso di commiato pronunciato da Gordon Brown sulla soglia di Downing Street

Come sapete dopo le elezioni generali, considerato che non c’è alcun partito in grado di guidare una maggioranza nella House of Commons, avevo affermato che avrei fatto tutto quanto nelle mie capacità per assicurare la formazione di un governo forte e duraturo; capace di affrontare in maniera efficace le sfide politiche ed economiche della Gran Bretagna.

Il mio obbligo costituzionale è di assicurare che un governo possa essere formato dopo le elezioni generali di giovedì scorso.

Ho informato il segretario privato della Regina che è mia intenzione rassegnare le dimissioni alla Regina.

Ho avuto il privilegio di imparare molto sul meglio della natura umana, e una buona quantità, anche, sulle sue fragilità, comprese le mie.

Qualora la Regina accetti, le chiederò di invitare il leader dell’opposizione (David Cameron) per cercare di formare il governo.

Auguro il meglio al prossimo primo ministro, visto che deve fare scelte importanti per il futuro.

Solo chi ha preso possesso dell’ufficio del primo ministro può comprendere il peso delle responsabilità e la sua grande capacità di fare bene.

Sostegno costante

Soprattutto, è stato un privilegio servire e, sì, amo il lavoro, non per il suo prestigio, i suoi titoli e le cerimonie, che non amo per niente, no, ho amato il lavoro per la sua capacità di rendere questo paese che amo più giusto, più tollerante, più verde, più democratico, più prospero e più giusto – davvero una grande Gran Bretagna.

Nel corso di molti anni, di sfide fino alla crisi finanziaria globale, ho sempre cercato di servire, di fare del mio meglio nell’interesse della Gran Bretagna, dei suoi valori e della sua gente.

E lasciatemi aggiungere ancora una cosa, ammirerò per sempre il coraggio che ho visto in nostre forze armate.

Ora la stagione politica è finita, vorrei sottolineare dopo avere stretto le loro mani e guardato nei loro occhi, che le nostre truppe rappresentano il meglio del nostro paese, e non potrò mai dimenticare tutti coloro che sono morti con onore e le cui famiglie vivono oggi in dolore.

Le mie dimissioni come leader del partito laburista avrà effetto immediato, e in questo momento voglio ringraziare tutti i colleghi, i ministri, i membri del Parlamento, e voglio ringraziare soprattutto i miei collaboratori che sono stati amici e servitori brillanti per il paese.

Prima di tutto voglio ringraziare Sarah per il suo sostegno incrollabile come pure il suo amore ed il servizio dato al nostro paese.

Ringrazio i miei figli, John e Frazier, per l’amore e la gioia che portano alla nostra vita e mentre lascio il secondo posto di lavoro più importante che avrei mai potuto tenere, nutro, ancor più, il primo come marito e padre.

Gordon Brown’s resignation statement

Gordon Brown has announced he is to resign as prime minister. This is his full statement:

As you know after the general election, that left no party able to command a majority in the House of Commons, I said I would do all that I could to ensure a strong, stable and principled government was formed; able to tackle Britain’s economic and political challenges effectively.

My constitutional duty is to make sure that a government can be formed following last Thursday’s general election.

I have informed the Queen’s private secretary that it is my intention to tender my resignation to the Queen.

I have been privileged to learn much about the very best in human nature, and a fair amount, too, about its frailties, including my own.

In the event the Queen accepts, I shall advise her to invite the leader of the opposition to seek to form a government.

I wish the next prime minister well, as he makes the important choices for the future.

Only those who have held the office of prime minister can understand the full weight of its responsibilities and its great capacity for good.

‘Unwavering support’

Above all, it was a privilege to serve and, yes, I love the job, not for its prestige, its titles and ceremony, which I do not love at all, no, I loved the job for its potential to make this country I love fairer, more tolerant, more green, more democratic, more prosperous and more just – truly a greater Britain.

In the face of many years, challenges up to and including the global financial meltdown, I have always tried to serve, to do my best in the interests of Britain, its values and its people.

And let me add one thing also, I will always admire the courage I have seen in our armed forces.

Now the political season is over, let me stress that having shaken their hands and looked into their eyes, our troops represent all that is best in our country, and I will never forget all those who have died in honour and whose families today live in grief.

My resignation as leader of the Labour Party will take effect immediately, and in this hour I want to thank all my colleagues, ministers, members of Parliament, and I want to thank above all my staff who have been friends as well as brilliant servants of the country.

Above all I want to thank Sarah for her unwavering support as well as her love and for her own service to our country.

I thank my sons John and Frazier for the love and joy they bring to our lives and as I leave the second most-important job I could ever hold, I cherish, even more, the first as a husband and father.
