La bandiera viene messa all’asta a New York da Bloomsbury Auctions. Si ritiene possa partire da una valutazione di 500.000 dollari.
Il Tricolore sarebbe sventolato in cima al GPO (General Post Office, Ufficio Postale Centrale) durante la rivolta.
La descrizione sul sito della casa d’aste dice che il tricolore di lino è accompagnato da una nota scritta dal Dr. George St. George (che aveva in possesso la bandiera fino al 1922) dove si legge: “Catturata dalle truppe britanniche al GPO di Dublino, Aprile 1916, e consegnata al Dr. George St. George da un vecchio veterano di guerra, Sergente Davis”.
La bandiera venne ereditata dalla figlia di St. George e quindi donata “ad un vicino, il figlio di un famoso nazionalista e statista irlandese, co-fondatore e presidente dello Sinn Fein”.
Secondo Bloomsbury Auctions “il fatto che questa bandiera è l’unico tricolore esistente ancora intero della Rivolta di Pasqua del 1916, quindi di estrema rarità ed importanza, lo rende un’icona unica e di incommensurabile significato nella storia della Rivoluzione irlandese”.

Tricolour from 1916 Rising to be auctioned
The flag is being auctioned by Bloomsbury Auctions in New York. It is estimated it could fetch up to $500,000.
The Tricolour is thought to have flown from the top of the GPO during the rising.
The auction house’s description says the linen Tricolour is accompanied by a note from Dr George St George, (who owned the flag untill1922) reading ‘Captured by British Troops at GPO Dublin, April 1916 and given to Dr George St George by an old War veteran, Sergt Davis’.
The flag was handed down to Mr St George’s daughter and then was gifted ‘to a neighbour, the son of a famous Irish nationalist and statesman, co-founder and early president of Sinn Féin’.
Bloomsbury Auctions says ‘the fact that this flag is the only recorded full sized Tricolour of the 1916 Rising in existence, and therefore of the utmost rarity and importance, makes it a unique icon of immeasurable significance in the history of the Irish Revolution.’
