Una fonte del servizio di sicurezza afferma che i repubblicani non sono vicini a lanciare un attacco contro la Gran Bretagna, nonostante i recenti arresti in Scozia
La polizia scozzese ha eseguito alcuni arresti di persone sospettate di aver commesso reati per contro dei gruppi repubblicani.
Gli arresti sono stati eseguiti in base alla Sezione 41 della Legge sul Terrorismo del 2000.
In una dichiarazione, la polizia scozzese: “L’operazione di polizia, che ha coinvolto anche il Police Service of Northern Ireland e il servizio di sicurezza, è stata focalizzata sulle attività di individui solidali con il repubblicanesimo dissidente, ma che non sono affiliati ad alcun gruppo specifico”.
Ma pur ammettendo che gli arresti sono uno sviluppo, una fonte ha suggeruto che la minaccia di un grave attacco in Gran Bretagna resta improbabile perché i gruppi repubblicani non dispongono del necessario materiale, sono senza personale e senza supporto.
“È ancora ampiamente accettato che i repubblicani non hanno la logistica necessaria per effettuare un attacco in Gran Bretagna, in termini di trasporto, armi, base di appoggio, rifugi, ecc.”, ha spiegato la fonte.
“Le lor munizioni sono limitate e ci sono pochissime nuove armi. Ci sono residui dello smantellamento degli arsenali. C’è sempre una quantità di armi che viene trattenuta, ma non ci sono molti esplosivi ad alto potenziale”.
La fonte ha anche suggerito che non c’è motivo di guardare alla Scozia come punto di accesso preferito da parte dei repubblicani per lanciare attacchi in Gran Bretagna. Ha anche respinto l’idea che i gruppi armati contrari al processo di pace abbiano la possibilità di effettuare un attacco in Gran Bretagna in concomitanza con il centenario della Rivolta del 1916.
“Loro vengono monitorati così strettamente che vengono gravemente limitate le loro capacità”.
La polizia scozzese non ha voluto rivelare se gli arrestati provengono dalla Repubblica o dal Nordirlanda e ha rifiutato di confermare il numero degli arrestati.

Dissident Republicans ‘no closer to attacking Britain’
DISSIDENT REPUBLICANS are no closer to launching an attack in Britain despite recent arrests made in Scotland under the Terrorism Act, a security source has suggested.
Police Scotland reported the arrest of several people suspected of committing various offences in relation to dissident Republicanism.
The arrests were made at a number of locations under section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000.
In a statement, Police Scotland said: “The policing operation, which also involved the Police Service of Northern Ireland and the security service, has been focused on the activities of individuals sympathetic to dissident Republicanism but who are not affiliated to any specific group.”
But while admitting that arrests for suspected dissident activity were a development, a source suggested that the threat of a serious terrorist attack in Britain remains unlikely because dissidents are without necessary materials, personnel and support.
“It is still widely accepted that Republican dissidents do not have the logistics to carry out an attack in Britain, in terms of transport, weapons, support base, safe houses etc,” the source explained.
“Their field of munitions is limited and there are very few new weapons appearing. There is residue from decommissioning. There is always a certain amount held back, but not enough in terms of high-grade explosives.”
The source also suggested there was no pattern to suggest Scotland was the preferred entry point for dissidents to launch attacks in Britain and dismissed the notion that dissident groups would have the capability of carrying out an attack in Britain to coincide with 1916 centenary celebrations.
“They are being monitored so closely that it is seriously limiting their capabilities.”
Police Scotland would not reveal whether those arrested were from the Republic or the North of Ireland and declined to confirm the number of people arrested.
