La polizia irlandese in assetto antisommossa si è scontrata con gli studenti che hanno occupato il ministero delle Finanze nel centro di Dublino
Durante le scene violente, almeno una persona è stata portata via, probabilmente svenuta. Altra gente era visibilmente ferita e sanguinante.
La Union of Students of Ireland (Unione degli Studenti di Irlanda) ha preso le distanze dalla violenza.
Gli studenti contestatori hanno occupato il ministero delle Finanze per protestare contro l’aumento delle tasse scolastiche nella Repubblica d’Irlanda.
Centinaia di studenti hanno partecipato alla protesta sedendosi a terra fuori dall’edificio ministeriale.
In precedenza, migliaia di studenti avevano marciato fino a Merrion Square, dove ci sono stati i comizi dei leader studenteschi.
L’Unione degli Studenti di Irlanda (USI) ha avvertito che migliaia di studenti saranno costretti a lasciare i college qualora le tasse scolastiche aumentassero ancora.
E’ stato paventato che le tasse potrebbero attestarsi a 2.500 euro annui, contro i 1.500 attuali.
Il presidente dell’USI Gary Redmond ha affermato: “L’organizzazione è molto dispiaciuta per il comportamento distruttivo di una minoranza di persone al ministero delle Finanze, vvenuto separatamente dalla marcia indetta da USI.
“Non possiamo perdonare il comportamento distruttivo e riteniamo che una protesta pacifica, un’aperta discussione e il dibattito siano le uniche strade percorribili per gli studenti d’Irlanda”.

Riot police and students clash in Dublin violence
Irish riot police have clashed with students who had occupied the Department of Finance in Dublin city centre.
In violent scenes, at least one person was carried away, possibly unconscious. Others were visibly injured and bleeding.
The Union of Students of Ireland distanced itself from the violence.
The student protesters occupied the Department of Finance in a stand against plans to increase fees for third level education in the Republic of Ireland.
Several hundred students also staged a sit-down protest outside the building.
Earlier, thousands of students marched to Merrion Square, where they were addressed by student leaders.
The Union of Students of Ireland (USI) has warned that thousands of students would be forced to drop out of college if the registration fee rises again.
It has been suggested that the charge could rise from its current level of 1,500 euros to 2,500 euros.
USI President Gary Redmond said: “The organisation is deeply disappointed at the destructive behaviour of a minority of people at the Department of Finance, which occurred separately from the USI march.
“We do not condone destructive behaviour and believe that peaceful protest and open discussion and debate is the way forward for the students of Ireland.”
