Fears voiced as Denny march gets green light
AROUND 400 people are expected to march on Denny next weekend in an event which some believe has the potential for “violence and conflict”.
The procession, organised by political group Cairde Na hEireann, – Friends of Ireland – takes place on Saturday, April 16, in an effort to draw attention to the alleged issue of racism against Irish people in the town.
Falkirk Council’s civic licensing board today gave the group permission to march despite numerous objections to the event, with local residents and Denny Community Council stating it would cause disruption to the town centre.
Those fears were partially allayed when the organisers agreed to follow a new route which would not take them through the town centre, but concerns over public safety remain.
Some committee members, including Councillor Alex Waddell, also questioned the organisation’s claims there was racism against Irish people in Denny.
Colin Belbin, of Denny Community Council, said: “A lot of people in Denny have Irish roots, but there is definitely no Irish racism in Denny. People just don’t want this march in Denny.”
