Parlando dai Paesi Baschi, Maskey ha detto:
“Questa visita nei Paesi Baschi è giunta dopo l’invito di Abertzale. Lo Sinn Féin è stato impegnato nella situazione dei Paesi Baschi per un po’ di tempo. Siamo lieti di condividere le nostre esperienze sulla costruzione della pace in Irlanda con questa popolazione e ascoltare la base dopo il recente comunicato di ETA.
“La nostra esperienza è che il dialogo inclusivo è fondamentale per il progresso politico nella risoluzione del conflitto. In Irlanda, quello è stato il punto in cui il progresso ha preso una direzione irreversibile”.
Cessate-il-fuoco di ETA: nota esplicativa
C’è una lunga affinità tra repubblicani irlandesi e il popolo basco.
Gerry Adams e gli altri alti dirigenti del partito si sono recati là molte volte.
Dalla fine del cessate-il-fuoco di ETA nel dicembre 2006 ci sono stati sforzi dietro le quinte per ripristinare il processo di pace.
Questi hanno coinvolto Gerry Adams e altri importanti membri dello Sinn Féin, impegnati in un dialogo continuo con Batasuna ed altri nel tentativo di ricostruire il processo di pace in stallo.
Nel mese di febbraio in una conferenza di Abertzale Left Regional Assemblies (Assemblee Regionali della Sinistra Abertzale), che comprende Batasuna, ha concordato una nuova strategia politica per il progresso.
Si basa pesantemente sul processo di pace in Irlanda, compreso uno specifico riferimento ai principi Mitchell, e si impegna Sinistra Abertzale ad utilizzare “esclusivamente mezzi politici e democratici” per promuovere i suoi obiettivi politici.
Si prefigge di promuovere il cambiamento politico “in una completa assenza di violenza e senza interferenze” e “condotta in conformità con i Principi Mitchell”. Ed il suo obiettivo politico è ottenere una “pace stabile e duratura nel Paese Basco”.
E’ fondamentale che gli stessi errori fatti nel 2006 non si ripetano. Il dialogo è urgente.
I gruppi separatisti baschi hanno speso un sacco di tempo internamente per concordare una nuova strada. ETA ha ora annunciato il suo cessate-il-fuoco. Ora c’è un’opportunità per progredire, e spero che il governo spagnolo la afferri.
Vi è anche un importante ruolo per la comunità internazionale nel promuovere la ripresa del processo di pace nei Paesi Baschi.

Speaking from the Basque Country Mr Maskey said:
“This visit to the Basque Country is at the invitation of the Abertzale. Sinn Féin has been engaged with the situation in the Basque Country for some time. We are keen to share our experiences of peace building in Ireland with people here and take soundings on the ground in the wake of the recent ETA statement.
“Our experience is that inclusive dialogue is key to political progress in conflict resolution. In Ireland, that was the point at which progress tilted in the direction of becoming irreversible.”
ETA cessation: Background Note:
There is a long affinity between Irish republicans and the Basque people.
Gerry Adams and other senior party leaders have been there many times.
Since the collapse of the ETA cessation in December 2006 there have been behind the scenes efforts to restore the peace process.
These have involved Gerry Adams and other senior Sinn Féin activists engaging in an ongoing dialogue with Batasuna and others in an effort to rebuild the stalled Basque peace process.
In February at a conference of the Abertzale Left Regional Assemblies, which includes Batasuna, a new political strategy for progress was agreed.
It draws heavily on the peace process in Ireland, including a specific reference to the Mitchell Principles, and commits Abertzale Left to using ‘exclusively political and democratic means’ to advance its political objectives.
It seeks to advance political change “in a complete absence of violence and without interference’ and ‘conducted in accordance with the Mitchell Principles.’ And its political goal is achieve a “stable and lasting peace in the Basque country.”
It is crucial that the same mistakes made in 2006 are not repeated. Dialogue is urgently required.
The Basque separatist groups have spent a lot of time internally agreeing a new way forward. ETA has now announced its cessation. There is now an opportunity for progress which I hope the Spanish government will grasp.
There is also an important role for the international community in encouraging a resurgent peace process in the Basque country.
