Giudice nordirlandese ordina estradizione di De Juana Chaos

José Ignacio de Juana Chaos (Iñaki), ex membro del gruppo separatista basco di ETA, ha sette giorni per appellarsi all’estradizione

Un giudice di Belfast ha ordinato l’estradizione verso la Spagna di un importante membro del gruppo armato basco di ETA per affrontare l’accusa di aver giustificato il terrorismo.

Il giudice Tom Burgess ha dato a de Juana sette giorni di tempo per appellarsi alla decisione.

De Juana, 54 anni, sarebbe accusato del reato di “giustificazione pubblica di atti terroristici” compiuto nell’agosto 2008 ad un raduno a Donostia (San Sebastian in spagnolo, realizzato per festeggiare il suo rilascio dal carcere.

De Juana Chaos ha trascorso in carcere 21 anni per il suo ruolo in 25 omicidi perpetrati da ETA durante la campagna di liberazione.

Il giudice ha respinto le affermazioni degli avvocati di De Juana, secondo i quali all’uomo non verrebbe garantito un processo equo in Spagna o che potrebbe essere accusato anche di altri reati oltre a quello scritto nel mandato di arresto europeo per il qualeè detenuto a Belfast.

De Juana, un tempo leader del commando ETA di stanza a Madrid, è comparso in aula vestito con una t-shirt arancione con lo slogan “Where is Jon?”, riferimento alla scomparsa del membro di ETA Jon Anza, avvenuta in Francia lo scorso anno e ritenuto assassinato dai suoi colleghi.

Jose Ignacio De Juana Chaos, a former member of the armed Basque group ETA, has seven days to appeal against the extradition.

A Belfast judge on Monday ordered the extradition to Spain of a former leader of Basque armed group ETA to face a charge of justifying terrorism.

Jose Ignacio De Juana Chaos has seven days to appeal against the extradition, Judge Tom Burgess said.

De Juana, 54, is alleged to have committed the offence of “public justification of terrorist acts” in August 2008 at a gathering in San Sebastian, Spain, to mark his release from jail.

He had just served 21 years for his part in 25 murders during ETA’s campaign of violence.

The judge rejected claims by De Juana’s lawyers he would not be given a fair trial in Spain or that he could be tried for any offence other than detailed in the European arrest warrant under which he has been held in Belfast.

De Juana, who was leader of ETA’s Madrid commando, appeared in court in an orange T-shirt bearing the slogan in Spanish ‘Where is Jon?’, a reference to ETA member Jon Antza who disappeared in France last year and is feared dead by his colleagues.
