Un uomo di 40 anni è stato arrestato in base alla legge sul terrorismo in un’operazione congiunta tra la PSNI e la polizia spagnola
Michelena è sospettato di essere un membro del gruppo armato separatista basco ETA ed è ricercato in Spagna per una serie di attacchi.
Il ministero degli interni spagnolo ha riferito che Michelena è oggetto di tre mandati di arresto.
Il ministero ha detto che fosse parte della cellula di Madrid dell’ETA, autrice di quattro attentati con autobomba nel 2001, durante uno dei quali fu ucciso un alto ufficiale dell’esercito ed un poliziotto.
Poi l’uomo è fuggito in Francia, ha aggiunto il ministero.
Nel 1994 Michelena era candidato per le elezioni europee per il partito radicale separatista basco Herri Batasuna, dichiarato illegale in Spagna nel 2003 per i suoi legami con l’ETA.
Da dicembre 2001 è nella lista europea dei presunti terroristi.
A inizio dell’anno l’ex membro anziano di ETA, Jose Ignacio de Juana Chaos, è fuggito dall’Irlanda del Nord mentre era fuori su cauzione.
De Juana Chaos è stato in carcere 20 anni per l’uccisione di 25 persone in 11 attentati ed è ricercato in Spagna con l’accusa di aver glorificato il terrorismo.
Un tribunale a Belfast ordinò l’estradizione del separatista basco, resosi irreperibile in Nordirlanda dal mese di aprile.
A febbraio di quest’anno le autorità spagnole non sono riuscite ad ottenere l’estradizione di Arturo Villanueva Arteaga, 33 anni, dall’Irlanda del Nord.
Arteaga era ricercato perché avrebbe fatto parte di un gruppo giovanile presumibilmente legati a ETA.

ETA suspect Fermin Vila Michelena arrested in Belfast
A 40-year-old man has been arrested under terrorism legislation in a joint operation between the PSNI and Spanish police.
Michelena is a suspected member of the armed Basque separatist group ETA and wanted in Spain for a number of attacks.
The Spanish interior ministry said he was the subject of three arrest warrants.
The ministry said he was part of ETA’s Madrid cell which carried out four car bomb attacks in 2001, one of which killed a senior army officer and a policeman.
He then fled to France the ministry added.
In 1994, he was a candidate for the European elections for the radical Basque separatist Herri Batasuna party, which was banned in Spain in 2003 over its links to ETA.
Since December 2001 he has been on a European Union list of terrorist suspects.
Earlier this year former senior ETA member, Jose Ignacio de Juana Chaos, jumped bail in Northern Ireland.
De Juana Chaos had served 20 years for the killing of 25 people in 11 attacks and is wanted in Spain on charges of glorifying terrorism.
A court in Belfast ordered the extradition of the Basque separatist who has not been seen in the country since April.
In February this year Spanish authorities failed to extradite Arturo Villanueva Arteaga, 33, from Northern Ireland.
Mr Arteaga was being sought over claims that he belonged to a youth group allegedly linked to ETA.
