Gerry Adams ha accolto con favore la dichiarazione odierna da parte di ETA di “un cessate-il-fuoco generale e permanente che sarà verificabile da parte della comunità internazionale”. Il leader dello Sinn Féin ha esortato il governo spagnolo “a cogliere l’opportunità per una pace duratura ed un nuovo inizio nelle relazioni tra il popolo basco e lo Stato spagnolo”
Parlando a Dublino, Gerry Adams afferma che ci sono state mosse “sismiche” nel processo.
In una dichiarazione, Gerry Adams ha detto:
Nel settembre dello scorso anno, ETA ha espresso la volontà di perseguire l’indipendenza basca con mezzi pacifici e democratici.
Quella fu una dichiarazione significativa.
Aveva il potenziale per giungere ad una fine definitiva del lungo conflitto nei Paesi Baschi.
Da alcuni furono sollevati dubbi riguardo all’impegno dell’ETA in questa strategia e l’opportunità di ottenere progressi non sono pienamente sfruttate.
L’affermazione odierna di ETA prosegue gli sforzi e gli impegni pubblici della Sinistra Abertzale e le osservazioni recenti di Arnaldo Otegi, il leader incarcerato di Batasuna.
In una recente intervista con il quotidiano americano The Wall Street Journal, Otegi ha affermato che Batasuna rifiuta la violenza come mezzo per raggiungere obiettivi politici.
Ora è indispensabile che il governo spagnolo risponda positivamente e colga l’opportunità per far avanzare un processo di pace presentato dalla dichiarazione di oggi e anche stabilire rapidamente i negoziati politici.
L’eurodeputata shinner Bairbre de Brún ha detto che “è imperativo che gli Stati Uniti ora agiscano per sostenere la pace nel Paese Basco”:
Questa dichiarazione è un enorme passo in avanti. E’ una risposta molto positiva alle richieste che sono state fatte da importanti figure internazionali come Mary Robinson e Nelson Mandela.
I governi spagnolo e francese dovrebbero cogliere le opportunità offerte da questa dichiarazione e porre fine a tutte le misure repressive.
E’ imperativo che gli Stati Uniti ora agiscano per sostenere la pace nel Paese Basco come chiesto nella risoluzione del Parlamento europeo nel mese di ottobre 2006.

GERRY ADAMS has welcomed today’s statement by ETA of “a permanent and general ceasefire which will be verifiable by the international community”. The Sinn Féin leader urged the Spanish Government “to grasp the opportunity for a lasting peace and a new beginning in the relationship between the Basque people and the Spanish state.”
Speaking in Dublin, Gerry Adams said there have been “seismic” moves in the process (see video here).
In a statement, Gerry Adams said:
In September last year, ETA expressed its desire to pursue Basque independence through peaceful and democratic means.
This was a significant statement.
It had the potential to bring about a permanent end to the long-running conflict in the Basque country.
Doubts were raised by some as to ETA’s commitment to this strategy and the opportunity for progress was not exploited fully.
Today’s statement by ETA follows on the public efforts and commitments of the Abertzale Left and recent comments by Arnaldo Otegi, the imprisoned leader of Batasuna.
In a recent interview with the US newspaper The Wall Street Journal, Mr Otegi said that Batasuna rejects violence as a means of attaining political objectives.
It is now vital that the Spanish Government respond positively and grasp the opportunity to advance a peace process presented by today’s statement and quickly establish inclusive political negotiations.

This declaration is a huge step forward. It is a very positive response to the requests that have been made by significant international figures such as Mary Robinson and Nelson Mandela.
The Spanish and French governments should now grasp the opportunity offered by this declaration and end all repressive measures
