Un diciannovenne accusato di essere tra gli istigatori dei disordini ha ammesso in aula di aver “agito da idiota”
“Dalla visione dei filmati delle telecamere a circuito chiuso del disordine pubblico che ha avuto luogo l’undici sera, sembrerebbe che il convenuto non stesse solo prendendo parte, bensì uno dei promotori principali”, ha detto in tribunale a Belfast l’ufficiale di polizia che lo ha collegato alle accuse.
Brophy affronta le accuse di assemblea riottosa e di possesso e lancio di una bottiglia molotov.
E’ anche accusato di aver aggredito un uomo e di aver minacciato di danneggiare la sua casa.
L’avvocato difensore Billy McNulty ha respinto l’accusa che il suo cliente abbia organizzato i disordini in strada.
Ha detto che Brophy non era a volto coperto, sostenendo che chi ha orchestrato i disordini avrebbe nascosto la propria identità.
McNulty ha detto alla corte che l’imputato è andato alla polizia spontaneamente ed ha accettato il suo coinvolgimento. Tuttavia ha negare l’accusa di aver proferito minacce.
“E’ abbastanza chiaro (dalle telecamere a circuito chiuso) che ha una bottiglia di birra da cui beveva”, ha affermato il legale. “Ha dichiarato di essere ubriaco e, usando le sue parole, ha agito da idiota.
“Ma da qui a dire che era l’orchestratore di questo tumulto, ce ne passa”.
Il giudice distrettuale George Conner ha detto che gli istigatori raramente sono finiti davanti ai giudici.
Ha affermato: “In genere riescono a nascondersi lontano e manipolare gli altri ad agire per loro conto”.
Ma il giudice Conner ripetuto il suo avvertimento: coloro che sono coinvolti in disordini possono aspettarsi di essere incarcerati.
A Brophy è stata rifiutata la libertà su cauzione ed è stato rimandato in custodia. Apparirà di nuovo in tribunale in videocollegamento il prossimo mese.
Nel frattempo un giovane di 18 anni è stato arrestato giovedì per li scontri dell’11 luglio.
Attualmente sta aiutando la polizia nel corso delle indagini.

Belfast rioter ‘acted the idiot’
A 19-year-old accused of being among the main instigators of serious Eleventh Night rioting in north Belfast has accepted he “acted the idiot”, a court has heard.
“From viewing CCTV of the public disorder that took place on the Eleventh, it would appear that the defendant wasn’t just taking part – he was one of the main instigators,” the police officer who connected him to the charges told Belfast Magistrates’ Court.
Brophy faces charges of riotous assembly and possessing and throwing a petrol bomb.
He’s also accused of assaulting a man and threatening to criminally damage his home.
Defence solicitor Billy McNulty rejected claims that his client organised the street disorder.
He said Brophy was not wearing a mask the footage, arguing that anyone who orchestrated the rioting would have hid their identity.
Mr McNulty told the court the accused went to police voluntarily and accepted his involvement. He does, however, deny the charge of threatening criminal damage.
“It’s quite clear (from the CCTV) that he has a bottle of beer, swigging from it,” the lawyer said. “He accepted he was drunk and, in his own words, he was acting the idiot.
“But to say he was the orchestrator or a prime-mover in this riot, I would take issue with.”
District Judge George Conner said that the instigators rarely ended up before the courts.
He said: “They generally manage to hide themselves away and manipulate others… to act on their behalf.”
But Judge Conner repeated his warning that those involved in rioting can expect to be jailed.
Brophy was refused bail and remanded back in custody to appear via video-link next month.
Meanwhile, an 18-year-old man has been arrested on Thursday over serious disorder on July 11.
He is helping police with their inquiries.
