Scontro verbale a distanza tra Winston Irvine, del North and West Belfast Parades and Cultural Forum, e Jackie McDonald, numero uno di UDA, sul percorso della parata del 12 luglio ad Ardoyne
Per McDonald il 12 luglio è “il giorno peggiore del suo anno” e ha criticato l’organizzazione della parata di North Belfast.
Ha affermato il lealista: “Non c’è niente di sbagliato nella parata, ma nel modo in cui gli ubriaconi (definiti Blue Bag Brigade, ossia chi compera grandi quantità di alcolici dai supermercati, Ndt), passano quattro o cinque ore a bere prima di andare a casa quando iniziano i disordini.
“La maggior parte si trova tra differenti fazioni lealiste come l’UDA, l’UVF e il Red Hand Commando.
“Tutte vecchie gelosie e rivalità di superficie. Non si vede un cattolico per chilometri”.
E il numero uno dell’UDA ha aggiunto: “Si creano tensioni e difficoltà e l’Orange Order e le bande non aiutano affatto.
“Penso ci si dovrebbe dimenticare completamente di quella parte di parata.
“È la stessa storia nelle altre interfacce dove ci sono state difficoltà in passato”.
Ieri il North and West Belfast Parades and Cultural Forum, che rappresenta le logge e le bande musicali, ha respinto la proposta del leader lealista.
Winston Irvine ha etichettato la proposta come “irresponsabile”.
“La prima cosa che potrei dire sui commenti Jackie McDonald è che si tratta di sue opinioni personali, ma non credo che, a tre giorni dalla parata e con una situazione sul filo del rasoio, i suoi commenti siano stati utili in qualche maniera”, ha spiegato.
“Parlando a nome del North and West Belfast Parades and Cultural Forum di Belfast, sono in totale disaccordo con lui.
“Penso che abbia completamente torto in ciò che afferma parlando di parata di sola andata.
“Per oltre 100 anni le logge hanno attraversato queste strade e ora Jackie McDonald ritiene che dovrebbero rinunciare.
“Si tratta di una questione che va diritto al cuore del problema, non solo qui a Belfast, ma in tutta l’Irlanda del Nord, dove alla comunità unionista non viene concesso alcun rispetto per la propria cultura.
“Penso che la sua affermazione sia stata totalmente irresponsabile”.
Irvine ha detto di aver ricevuto un feedback forte, che si oppone ad una parata senza il previsto percorso di rientro.
Conclude il rappresentante lealista: “Quello che non voglio fare è sopravvalutare quello che ha detto Jackie McDonald, ma è chiaro che le sue opinioni non sono condivise da chi, nella comunità che si occupa delle parate, sta già affrontando una decisione della Commissione Parate che è a dir poco umiliante”.

One-way Orange march comments ‘irresponsible’

Mr McDonald said the Twelfth was “the worst day of his year” and criticised the north Belfast parade.
He said: “There’s nothing wrong with the outward parade, but it’s the way the hangers-on, the blue-bag brigade, spend four to five hours drinking before going home when the trouble kicks off.
“Most of it is between different loyalist factions, the UDA, the UVF and the Red Hand Commando.
“All the old jealousies and rivalries surface. There’s not a Catholic for miles.”
And the UDA chief added: “It creates tensions and trouble and it does the Orange Order and the bands no favours at all.
“I think they should forget that part of the parade completely.
“It’s the same story at other interfaces where there has been trouble in the past.”
Yesterday, the North and West Belfast Parades and Cultural Forum, which represents the lodges and bands, rejected the suggestion from the loyalist leader.
Winston Irvine from the group labelled the suggestion as “irresponsible”.
“The first thing that I would say about Jackie McDonald’s comments are that they were his own personal views, but I do not think that, given three days before the march and with the situation on a knife-edge, that his comments have been helpful in any way whatsoever,” he said.
“Speaking on behalf of the forum in north and west Belfast, I totally disagree with him.
“I think he is completely wrong in what he said about making the parade one-way.
“For well over 100 years lodges have been traversing these routes and now Jackie McDonald thinks that they should give that up.
“This is an issue which goes right to the heart of the problem, not just here in Belfast but across Northern Ireland, where the unionist community is not being afforded the respect for their culture.
“I think what he has said has been totally irresponsible.”
Mr Irvine said he had received strong feedback, which opposed a one-way parade.
He said: “What I do not want to do is to overstate what Jackie McDonald has said, but it is clear that his views are not shared by those from the parading community who are already facing a decision from the Parades Commission which is nothing short of humiliation.”
