Investigare le atrocità del passato costa alla polizia nordirlandese ben 12 milioni di sterline ogni anno

I costi includono l’esecuzione di 31 inchieste con la redazione dei documenti ed il sostegno dato all’Historical Enquiries Team (HET) nelle indagini su più di 3000 omicidi irrisolti.

La vice comandante della PSNI, Judith Gillespie, ha riferito al Policing Board a Belfast: “Spendere 12 milioni investigando sul passato non è spendere 12 milioni di sterline qui ed ora.

“Preferiremmo spendere il nostro budget per i problemi attuali ma comprendiamo ci siano questioni emozionali”.

Il Sudafrica affrontò i crimini commessi durante l’apartheid instaurando la Truth and Reconciliation Commission (Commissione per la Verità e la Riconciliazione), che esaminò gli eventi compresi tra il 1960 ed il 1994.

Una commissione similare era stata raccomandata lo scorso anno da Lord Eames e Denis Bradley, che analizzarono il sistema con cui l’Irlanda del Nord avrebbe dovuto gestire l’eredità dei Troubles.

Se implementata, la Commissione prenderebbe il posto di HET e di qualsiasi indagine portata avanti dal Police Ombudsman Al Hutchinson.

£12m a year to ‘police the past’

INVESTIGATING past atrocities is costing police in Northern Ireland £12 million a year, it was revealed yesterday (2nd September 2010).

That includes supplying 31 inquests with redacted documents and supporting a Historical Enquiries Team (HET) investigating more than 3,000 unresolved killings.

Deputy chief constable Judith Gillespie told the Policing Board in Belfast: “Twelve million pounds spent on policing the past is not £12 million spent on policing the here and now.

“We would much rather spend our policing budget on policing the here and now but we understand there are emotive issues.”

South Africa dealt with crimes committed during the apartheid era by establishing a Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which examined events between 1960 and 1994.

A similar commission was recommended last year by Lord Eames and Denis Bradley, who looked at how Northern Ireland should deal with the legacy of the Troubles.

If implemented, the commission would take the place of the HET and any ongoing investigations by police ombudsman Al Hutchinson.
