La PSNI ha eseguito quasi 4.000 operazioni di stop and search (blocco e perquisizione) in circa 7 anni.
I numeri sono stati ottenuti dal partito repubblicano éirígí attraverso il Freedom of Information Act, la legge sulla libertà di informazione.
Si apprende così che tra il 1° gennaio 2009 e il 31 gennaio 2015 un totale di 3.957 persone sono state fermate e perquisite in base alla Legge Anti Terrorismo nella zona di Newry e Mourne, che copre gran parte di South Down.
Nelle stesse date la polizia ha eseguito perquisizioni in 221 locali.
Preoccupazioni sono state sollevate in passato sul numero di operazioni di “stop and search” compiute nelle aree nazionaliste, tra cui Ardoyne a North Belfast e nel North Antrim.
Stephen Murney, rappresentante di éirígí a Newry, ha detto che i numeri dimostrano come la PSNI sia colpevole di “polizia politica”.
“Il fatto che quasi 4.000 stop and search abbiano avuto luogo, insieme a 220 raid contro case e altri locali, nella sola zona di Newry suggerisce che la PSNI sta continuando a trattare gli abitanti di Newry come una comunità sospetta”.
Lo scorso anno éirígí ha lanciato un sito ed un’app per cellulare con la quale ricordare alle persone i loro diritti durante le operazioni di “stop and search”.
Tuttavia l’Ispettore Capo Joe McMinn ha affermato: “La PSNI è impegnata nel tenere la gente al sicuro e questo coinvolge i poteri di stop and search come parte delle nostre attività anti terrorismo.
“È solo uno dei metodi con cui combattiamo la crescente minaccia terroristica, il cui livello è attualmente attestato su ‘grave’, per assicurarci di fare qualsiasi cosa per mantenere al sicuro le comunità”.

Almost 4,000 stop and search operations in Newry area
THE PSNI has carried out almost 4,000 ‘stop and search’ operations in Co Down over a seven-year period, it has been claimed.
The figures were obtained by republican party Éirigí through the Freedom of Information Act.
They reveal that between January 1, 2009 and January 31, 2015, a total of 3,957 people were stopped and searched under the Terrorism Act and Justice and Security Act in the Newry and Mourne Policing Area, which covers a large part of south Down.
Between the same dates 221 premises were searched during police raids.
Concerns have been raised in the past about levels of stop and search operations in nationalist areas including Ardoyne in north Belfast and parts of north Antrim.
Stephen Murney, an Éirigí representative in Newry, claimed the figures demonstrate that the PSNI is guilty of “political policing”.
“The fact that almost 4,000 stop and searches took place, along with over 220 raids on family homes and other premises, in the Newry area would suggest that the PSNI are still treating the people of Newry as a ‘suspect community’.”
Last year Éirigí launched a website and mobile phone app to tell people their rights during stop and search operations.
However, Chief Inspector Joe McMinn said: “The Police Service of Northern Ireland is committed to keeping people safe and this involves using stop and search powers as part of our counter terrorism operational activity.
“It is one of a number of ways that we combat the ongoing terrorist threat, which is currently assessed as ‘severe’, to ensure that we are doing everything possible to keep communities safe.”
