Un padre cattolico è stato assassinato da un gruppo di almeno 30 lealisti UDA a Coleraine.
Gli scontri sono scoppiati dopo gli incontri del campionato di calcio scozzese che coinvolgevano Rangers e Celtic Glasgow
Il vice primo ministro nordirlandese, Martin McGuinness, ha detto che “un buon numero di lealisti” sono responsabili per l’omicidio ed un precedente assalto.
“Hanno pensato fosse una buona idea attaccare un’area cattolica”, ha proclamato il politico shinner.
“Sono assolutamente sgomento per l’accaduto e credo che in questo tempo così importante, è fondamentale che la gente nella comunità identifichi i responsabili e cooperi con la polizia per consegnare alla giustizia gli assassini”, ha proseguito McGuinness.
Anche il parlamentare di Westminster, eletto nella circoscrizione di East Londonderry tra gli unionisti del DUP, ha condannato l’omicidio.
“C’è stata una totale condanna per questa uccisione come per tutte le altre morti, non importa quando o dove sono avvenute o chi erano le vittime”, ha detto Campbell.
“Deve esserci la più completa collaborazione tra chiunque fosse nella zona e la polizia, per poter portare i responsabili di fronte al tribunale”.
Gruppo di linciatori
Il parlamentare nazionalista John Dallat, SDLP, conosceva bene la famiglia McDaid.
“Questo uomo non stava facendo nient’altro che andare a controllare i propri figli ed ha perso la vita quando un gruppo di linciatori provenienti da diverse parti della città sono arrivati e hanno propugnato la loro forma di giustizia.
“E’ certamente illegale e deve essere compreso.
“Il passo importante dovrebbe essere un’inchiesta.
“Deve essere completa, dettagliata e non dobbiamo discuterci sopra per anni”, ha concluso Dallat.

Man killed after football trouble
A 49-year-old man has died after violence broke out in Coleraine following football matches involving Rangers and Celtic.
The deputy first minister, Martin McGuinness, said a “sizeable group of loyalists” were responsible for the killing and an earlier assault.
“They decided it was a good idea to attack a Catholic area,” he said.
“I’m absolutely dismayed at this and I think at this very, very important time, it’s important that people in the community identify those responsible and co-operate with the police to bring those murderers to justice,” said Mr McGuinness continued.
The East Londonderry MP, Gregory Campbell, also condemned the murder.
“There has to be total condemnation of this killing as we would do for all other killings, no matter when or where they occurred or who the victims were,” he said.
“There ought to be the fullest possible co-operation between everyone in the area and the police in order to bring those responsible to justice.”
‘Lynching mob’
SDLP assembly member John Dallat said he knew Mr McDaid’s family well.
“This man was doing nothing more than going down to check on his sons and lost his life when this lynching mob from a different part of the town came along and rendered their form of justice.
“It’s certainly lawlessness and it needs to addressed.
“The immediate emphasis should be on an inquiry.
“It must be thorough, it must be detailed, and we mustn’t be discussing it years into the future,” said Mr Dallat.
