I nostri segugi hanno scoperto il piano – che mettere una ricompensa di 75.000 sterline sulla testa dell’ex boss lealista – e inviato i dettagli agghiaccianti della trama agli investigatori.
Dopo poche ore dalla nostra comunicazione, la polizia ha avvertito Adair.
Due agenti in divisa hanno visitato Adair nella sua casa di Ayrshire venerdì sera.
Si sono recati da lui per consegnare l’avvertimento chiamato Osman, in cui gli obiettivi di trame criminose credibili sono avvertiti che la loro vita potrebbe essere in pericolo.
Siamo in grado di rivelare che il sicario aveva già testato un letale mitragliatore Heckler & Koch prima dell’attacco pianificato.
E l’aspirante assassino ha detto agli amici: “Potrei farlo con una pistola ma non vogliono dargli alcuna possibilità – hanno detto che vogliono tagliarlo a metà”.
L’uomo – che non può essere identificato per ragioni legali – ha detto che gli erano state promesse 75.000 sterline per effettuare l’agguato.
Fonti della polizia di Strathclyde – al quale abbiamo passato le nostre informazioni – la notte scorsa ha confermato che la minaccia è stata presa sul serio.
Una fonte interna ha riferito: “Ci sono elementi in questa notizia che sono altamente credibili, e viene quindi indagata con urgenza”.
Ufficiali dell’unità grande criminalità e terrorismo hanno avviato un’indagine dopo che abbiamo passato informazioni dettagliate provenienti da fonti malavitose riguardanti il piano di attacco.
Il piano sarebbe l’ultimo di una serie di minacce contro l’ex capo dell’Ulster Freedom Fighters, costretto a fuggire dall’Irlanda del Nord per paura di essere assassinato.
Consociati dell’uomo ingaggiato per uccidere Adair affermano che era vicino a realizzare la missione mortale.
Il killer si è vantato con gli amici di aver già testato la Heckler & Koch presso il campo da golf di Knightswood a Glasgow nelle ultime due settimane.
La fonte dice: “A quanto pare, ha sparato una volta ad alcuni alberi sul percorso nel cuore della notte durante una prova.
“Ma poi l’arma inceppata è stata inviata in riparazione.
“Non vogliono dargli alcuna probabilità (di sopravvivere) – non vogliono dubbi.
“Da quello che viene detto, non appena la mitragliatrice torna a funzionare, il piano verrà messo in pratica.
“Per essere onesti, se la mitragliatrice non si fosse inceppata, Johnny Adair potrebbe essere morto.
“Questo ragazzo è un uomo serio e molto pericoloso – è uno psicopatico che non indietreggia davanti ad un lavoro come questo. Non dirà mai chi c’è dietro questo progetto complesso. Ma, ovviamente, si tratta di alcuni gangster con un sacco di soldi e una reale volontà di liberarsi di Adair”.
Un’altra fonte vicina al killer ha detto che gli erano state promesse 10mila sterline della paga da incassare appena prima di effettuare l’attacco, mentre il resto sarebbe stato pagato in seguito. L’uomo ha aggiunto: “Sono un sacco di soldi, ma c’è molto in gioco.
“Questo è un grosso lavoro che avrebbe conseguenze gravi in Gran Bretagna e Irlanda.
“Ora forse dice di vivere una vita tranquilla in Ayrshire, ma Johnny Adair è ancora un enorme bersaglio, con nemici in entrambe le fazioni.
“E’ odiato tanto da molti lealisti quanto dai repubblicani. Non manca la gente che vorrebbe vederlo morto”.
Un portavoce della polizia di Strathclyde ha detto del piano: “Stiamo lavorando sulle informazioni passateci e le indagini stanno continuando”.
Il killer ingaggiato è un rapinatore a mano armata già condannato che ha trascorso parecchi anni in carcere per una serie di aggressioni violente.
E’ stato stretto collaboratore dei repubblicani irlandesi e del famigerato John Lynch di Glasgow, morto di cancro nel 2006.
Lynch, il cui pub The Old Barns, in Calton, Glasgow, è stato bombardato dai membri della UVF scozzese nel 1979, era ben noto per ricettazione e per suoi legami con il repubblicano irlandese militante.
Dopo ciò Lynch restituì allo storico pub il suo nome originale The Old Burnt Barns.
Nove membri della UVF, guidati da “Big Bill” Campbell furono imprigionati.
Susan, la moglie di Lynch, disse all’Alta Corte di Glasgow che gli scommettitori nel pub continuarono a bere anche se l’esplosione fece crollare il soffitto.
L’associato ha detto del pistolero: “Ha fatto molti lavori in passato ed è stato molto vicino a John Lynch.
“E’ conosciuto come uno spietato mercenario che non ha paura di essere coinvolto nei problemi di altre persone.”
I costruttori di armi tedeschi della Heckler & Koch forniscono armi per le unità d’elite in tutto il mondo, tra cui la SAS britannica ed i Navy Seals americani.
L’attuale modello di pistola mitragliatrice MP5, utilizzato dalla polizia britannica, è una delle armi più letali del mondo, in grado di sparare fino a 900 colpi al minuto.
Adair, che ha celebrato il suo compleanno numero 47, rimane uno dei volti più riconoscibili del sanguinoso passato dell’Irlanda del Nord.
Ha comandato la brutale Compagnia C della UFF, un nome di copertura utilizzata dalla Ulster Defence Association per commettere atti di terrorismo.
Gli investigatori ritengono Adair ed i suoi uomini responsabili di 40 omicidi nei tre anni in cui fu comandante UDA fino al 1994.
Nel 1995 fu condannato a 16 anni di carcere per aver diretto i terroristi.
Fu rilasciato nel 1999 nel quadro dell’Accordo del Venerdì Santo, ma alla fine fu cacciato di UDA e divenne una figura odiata dai lealisti.
Adair venne riportato in prigione per aver violato la sua licenza per il rilascio nel 2003, infine liberato due anni dopo.
Prima è andato con sua moglie Gina ed il resto della famiglia in Lancashire prima di trasferirsi a Troon, dove risiede in un attico.
Johnny Adair è sopravvissuto a 13 minacce di morte precedenti – e ieri si è scrollato di dosso l’ultimo complotto per ucciderlo.
Adair ha aggiunto: “Le minacce contro di me non sono una novità.
“Ne ho ricevute così tante nel corso degli anni che mi scivolano addosso come l’acqua dalla schiena di un’anatra. Ma voglio dire che chiunque sia dietro questa minaccia sembra un pazzo”.
Adair ha confermato che la polizia ha visitato la sua casa nella serata di venerdì e gli ha notificato un avviso ufficiale – noto come Osman.
Tuttavia, gli ufficiali di polizia non sono stati in grado di fornirgli i dettagli del piano.
Ha detto Adair: “Potrebbero essere degli idioti che non hanno niente di meglio da fare nel loro tempo. E’ facile per tipi come quelli utilizzare il mio nome, perché la gente mi conosce e conosce il mio background.
“Ma se la minaccia contro di me è seria allora chi c’è dietro di essa è un dilettante, perché adesso tutti la conoscono.
“Questo non è affatto intelligente.
“Non c’è stato quasi alcun problema da quando mi sono trasferito in Scozia. Voglio continuare in questo modo.”
Nel 2003, mesi dopo l’espulsione di Adair dall’UDA, il suo ex amico John “Grugg” Gregg – uno dei responsabili della sua espulsione dal gruppo paramilitare – fu ucciso al suo ritorno a Belfast da una partita dei Glasgow Rangers.

Assassin ordered to use machine gun in £75k hit on feared Loyalist mob boss Johnny ‘Mad Dog’ Adair
Our investigators uncovered the plan – which put a s75,000 price on the head of the former Loyalist kingpin – and passed the chilling details of the plot to detectives.
Within hours of us passing on our intelligence, police moved to warn Adair.
Two uniformed officers visited Adair at his home in Ayrshire on Friday night.
They went there to to deliver a so-called Osman warning, in which targets of credible hit plots are warned their lives could be in danger.
We can reveal the hitman had already tested a lethal Heckler & Koch sub-machine gun ahead of the planned attack.
And the would-be assassin told friends: “I could do it with a handgun but they’re not taking any chances – they said they want him cut in half.”
The violent ex-con – who cannot be identified for legal reasons – said that he had been promised s75,000 to carry out the hit.
Sources in Strathclyde Police – to whom we passed our intelligence on the gunman – last night confirmed that the threat was being taken seriously.
One police source said: “There are elements of this claim which are highly credible and it is being investigated as a matter of urgency.”
Officers from the major crime and terrorism investigation unit launched an inquiry after we passed on detailed information from underworld sources about the assassination plot.
The plan is understood to be the latest in a series of threats made against the former Ulster Freedom Fighters chief, who was forced to flee Northern Ireland in fear of his life.
Associates of the man hired to kill Adair claim he was close to carrying out the deadly mission.
The hitman boasted to friends that he had already tested the Heckler & Koch on Glasgow’s Knightswood golf course within the past two weeks.
A source said: “Apparently, he fired once at some trees on the course in the dead of night as a test run.
“But the weapon then jammed so it is away being repaired.
“They don’t want any chances – they want no doubt.
“From what’s being said, as soon as the gun is functioning again, the hit is back on.
“To be honest, if the gun hadn’t jammed, Johnny Adair could well be dead by now.
“This guy is a serious man and highly dangerous – he’s a psycho who wouldn’t flinch at a job like this. He will never say who’s behind this whole plan. But it’s obviously some gangster with lots of cash and a real determination to get rid of Adair.”
Another source close to the hitman said he had been promised s10,000 of the assassination fee up front just before carrying out the shooting, with the remainder being paid afterwards . The associate added: “It’s a lot of money but there is a lot at stake.
“This is a major job which would have serious consequences in Britain and Ireland.
“He maybe says he’s living the quiet life in Ayrshire now, but Johnny Adair is still a huge target with enemies on both sides.
“He’s as hated by many Loyalists as he is the Republicans. He’s not short of people who would like to see him dead.”
A spokesman for Strathclyde Police said of the assassination plot last night: “We are acting on information passed to us and inquiries are continuing.”
The hired hitman is a convicted armed robber who has served several years in jail for a string of violent assaults.
He was a close associate of Irish republican and notorious Glasgow fence John Lynch, who died of cancer in 2006.
Lynch, whose pub The Old Barns, in Calton, Glasgow, was bombed by Scots members of the UVF in 1979, was well known for handling stolen goods and his links to militant Irish republicanism.
In defiance, Lynch later returned the historic pub to its original name of The Old Burnt Barns.
Nine UVF members headed by”Big Bill” Campbell were jailed.
Lynch’s wife Susan told the High Court in Glasgow that punters in the pub carried on drinking even though the blast brought down the ceiling.
The associate said of the gunman: “He’s done a lot of jobs in the past and was very close to John Lynch.
“He’s known as a ruthless hired hand who’s not afraid to get involved in other people’s problems.”
German gun-builders Heckler & Koch supply weapons to elite units throughout the world, including crack SAS troops and US Navy Seals.
The current model of MP5 submachine gun, used by British armed police, is one of the world’s deadliest weapons, capable of firing up to 900 rounds a minute.
Adair, who celebrated his 47th birthday this week, remains one of the most recognisable faces from Northern Ireland’s bloody past.
He commanded the brutal C Company of the UFF, a cover name used by the Ulster Defence Association for acts of terrorism.
Detectives believe Adair and his men were responsible for up to 40 killings in the three years he was a UDA commander up to 1994.
He was jailed in 1995 for 16 years for directing terrorism.
He was released in 1999 under the Good Friday Agreement but was eventually booted out of the UDA and became a hate figure for loyalists.
Adair was returned to prison for breaching his release licence in 2003 but finally freed two years later.
He first joined his then wife Gina and other family in Lancashire before moving to Troon, where he now lives in a penthouse flat.
Johnny Adair has survived 13 previous death threats – and yesterday shrugged off the latest plot to kill him.
Adair added: “Threats against me are nothing new.
“I’ve had plenty of those over the years and it’s like water off a duck’s back. But I will say that whoever is behind this threat sounds like a fool.”
Adair confirmed that police visited his home on Friday night and issued an offical warning – known as an Osman.
However, officers were unable to give him details of the plot.
He said: “It could be some idiot with nothing better to do with their time. It’s easy for guys like that to shout their mouth off about me because people know me and know my background.
“But if the threat against me is serious then whoever is behind it are amateurs because everyone knows about it now.
“That’s not clever at all.
“There’s been hardly any trouble since I moved to Scotland. I want to keep it that way.”
In 2003, months after Adair was expelled from the UDA, his former pal John “Grugg” Gregg – one of the leaders who threw him out – was shot dead when he returned to Belfast from a Rangers match in Glasgow.
