Il ministro per lo Sviluppo Sociale Alex Attwood ha fatto l’annuncio in settimana.
Dice che il finanziamento sarà impiegato per luoghi della cultura e dei servizi, aree di vendita al dettaglio e un locale al coperto, che si sfideranno per eventi di prestigio come i BRIT Awards e Sports Personality of the Year.
“Voglio che le comunità abbiano i maggiori benefici dall’anno come Città della Cultura”, afferma il ministro.
“Già abbiamo in fase di avvio alcuni interessanti progetti per cui utilizzare i 10 milioni di sterline. Ilex presto avvierà la realizzazione di un padiglione smontabile, che accoglierà 8.000 persone. Questo sarebbe un luogo importante per competere nell’acquisire eventi del calibro dei Brit Awards e di Sport Personality of the Year.
“Fino a 1 milione di sterline di finanziamento, saranno fornite anche per migliorare una serie di settori di vendita al dettaglio sia a Cityside che a Waterside”.
Il sindaco di Derry Colum Eastwood dice che l’investimento riconosce il potenziale della Città della Cultura e crea opportunità immediate.
Nel frattempo il ministro Attwood ha anche annunciato un notevole aumento di posti di lavoro per la città.
Novantacinque posti di lavoro della Social Security Agency (Agenzia Sicurezza Sociale) saranno trasferito da Belfast agli uffici di Derry con sede a Carlisle House.
Il processo di spostamento dei posti, che gestiscono le pensioni statali, verrà completata entro la primavera del 2012.
Facendo l’annuncio, il ministro ha affermato: “Questa è una buona notizia per Derry. Circa 95 posti attualmente a Belfast saranno spostati, per finire insieme alle 300 persone che gestiscono il credito pensionistico a Derry”.
“Ciò consentirà una più stretta collaborazione tra questi due servizi principali, in futuro, per la fornitura di un servizio di pensione unica in Irlanda del Nord”.
Attwood ha confermato che non ci saranno licenziamenti associati a questo trasferimento e il personale che non si trasferisce a Derry sarà spostato all’interno della Social Security Agency, del ministero per lo Sviluppo Sociale o nel più ampio Servizio Civile.

Derry gets £10million for culture year – and almost 100 civil service jobs
Stormont’s Social Development minister Alex Attwood made the announcement in the city this morning.
He says the funding will go towards culture venues and services, retail areas and an indoor venue which will compete for prestigious events such as the BRIT Awards and Sports Personality of the Year.
“I want communities to benefit as much as possible from the City Of Culture year,” he says.
“Already we have in train some exciting projects earmarked for the £10million. Ilex will shortly commence a process to procure a demountable pavilion, which will accommodate 8,000 people. This would be a plum venue for competing for the likes of the BRIT Awards and Sports Personality of the Year.
“Up to £1million of funding will also be provided to enhance a number of retail areas on both the Cityside and Waterside.”
Derry’s mayor Colum Eastwood says the investment recognises the potential of the City of Culture and creates immediate delivery opportunities.
Meanwhile Minister Attwood, has also announced a major jobs boost for the city.
Ninety-five Social Security Agency jobs will be relocated from Belfast to offices based at Carlisle House in Derry.
The process of relocating the posts, which deal with the state pension, will be completed by Spring 2012.
Making the announcement, the Minister said: “This is good news for Derry. Around 95 posts currently based in Belfast will be relocated, to sit alongside 300 staff administering pension credit in Derry.”
“This will allow for closer working between these two services leading, in the future, to the delivery of a single pension service in Northern Ireland.”
Mr Attwood confirmed that there will be no redundancies associated with this relocation and staff that do not move to Derry will be redeployed within the Social Security Agency, the Department for Social Development or the wider Civil Service.
