I disordini nel Bogside di lunedì sera e martedì mattina sono stati tra i “peggiori del decennio”, secondo la polizia
Numerose molotov sono state lanciate contro un’autovettura pattuglia della polizia che era in fiamme quando apparve l’uomo armato che sparò cinque colpi al veicolo.
L’ispettore capo Nick McCaw ha detto di ritenere i repubblicani dissidenti responsabili per gli attacchi.
“Uomini armati si nascondeva in giro tra le ombre di questa campagna orchestrata dai repubblicani dissidenti in città e siamo fortunati che non siamo seduti qui, oggi, a parlare di morti”, ha detto.
“Invito la comunità a nominare queste persone coinvolte in questi attacchi, a nominare l’uomo armato che è stato coinvolto in questo tentato omicidio di agenti di polizia, in modo che possiamo effettuare arresti e portarli davanti al tribunale”.
La polizia sta trattando gli attacchi come tentati omicidi.
Nessuno è rimasto ferito e l’uomo è scappato.
Una molotov è stata gettata contro un furgone in transito.
Le preoccupazioni della polizia
La parlamentare dello Sinn Fein e membro del Policing Board, Martina Anderson, ha detto che è necessario fermare gli attacchi .
“Sono state lanciate 40-60 molotov nelle nostre strade, la notte scorsa nel Bogside” ha riferito.
“C’era un uomo che avrebbe potuto essere seriamente ferito in un furgone di passaggio . Poi abbiamo avuto la sparatoria.
“Non vogliamo che questo avvenga nel Bogside”.
Il parlamentare di Foyle Mark Durkan ha detto l’incidente è emerso che la polizia dovrebbe essere preoccupati di essere attirati in situazioni pericolose.
“Se la gente non vuole ascoltare i politici, come me, ascolti le preoccupazioni e gli interessi della gente di Derry che non vogliono alcuna violenza effettuata in loro nome per qualsiasi causa”, ha affermato.
“Chiaramente c’è stata organizzazione e sottolinea il fatto che la polizia deve esaminare se, rispondendo ad un incidente, potrebbe essere attirata in qualcosa di peggio”.

Derry rioting ‘among worst in decade’
Rioting in the Bogside on Monday night and Tuesday morning was among “the worst in a decade”, police have said.
Petrol bombs were thrown at a police patrol car which was on fire when a gunman appeared and fired five shots at the vehicle from a handgun.
Chief Inspector Nick McCaw said he believed dissident republican were behind the attacks.
“Gunmen were skulking around in the shadows of this orchestrated campaign by dissident republicans in the city and we’re lucky that we are not sitting here today talking about fatalities,” he said.
“I would call on the community to out these people who were involved in these attacks, to out the gunman who was involved in this attempted murder of police officers, so we can make arrests and bring them before the courts.”
Police said they were treating the attacks as attempted murder.
No-one was injured and the gunman ran off.
A petrol bomb was also thrown at a passing van.
Police concerns
Sinn Fein MLA and Policing Board member Martina Anderson said the attacks needed to stop.
“There were 40 to 60 petrol bombs fired in our streets, last night in the Bogside,” she said.
“There was a man who could have been seriously injured passing in a van. Then we had the shooting incident.
“We do not want that happening in the Bogside.”
Foyle MP Mark Durkan said the incident showed that police should be worried about being lured into dangerous situations.
“If people don’t want to listen to politicians like me, listen to the concerns and interest of the people of Derry who don’t want any violence carried out anywhere in their name for any cause,” he said.
“Clearly there was a set piece to this and it underlines the point that police do have to consider whether, responding to an incident, they are being set up for something worse.”
