Dopo i colloqui è finito il braccio di ferro tra i prigionieri repubblicani e le autorità della prigione di Maghaberry
Durante la Dirty Protest portata avanti dai prigionieri, alle guardie carcerarie sono stati offerti vestiti protettivi perché gli era stata lanciata addosso urina.
Un gruppo di mediatori, tra cui rappresentanti sindacali, hanno detto che i risultati dei colloqui rimarranno confidenziali.
Una dichiarazione recita: “Le discussioni erano sostenute dalle preoccupazioni per i diritti ed il benessere dei prigionieri, per la protezione della sicurezza delle guardie carcerarie ed il mantenimento dell’alta sicurezza della prigione di Maghaberry.
“Questo dialogo ha portato a un risultato positivo e a un accordo per far cessare la protesta presso la Roe House”.
Insieme all’Irish Congress of Trade Unions, il gruppo di mediatori comprendeva Creggan Enterprises da Derry e Dialogue Advisory Group da Amsterdam.
Difficoltà
Il risultato dei colloqui è stato accolto positivamente dal ministro della Giustizia David Ford.
Ha detto il ministro: “Il benessere e la sicurezza sia del personale che dei prigionieri sono stati centrali nelle discussioni e sono lieto che sia stato raggiunto un accordo che permetta una revisione delle sistemazioni e delle procedure, ma in nessun modo diluisce la sicurezza della prigione o di chi lavora e vive qui”.
Ha parlato di “processo difficile” e ha ringraziato i mediatori per i loro sforzi.
“Mi complimento anche con il personale della Roe House che negli ultimi tempi ha compiuto i propri compiti con dignità e professionalità.
“Un regime carcerario sicuro ed umano è il cuore di una «prigione sana» e il pieno rispetto di tutte le parti verso questo accordo porterà ad una stabilità duratura”.
Il braccio di ferro iniziò la domenica di Pasqua, quando 28 prigionieri si barricarano nella sala mensa e distrussero i bagni delle loro celle.
La scorsa settimana 100 contestatori marciarono da West Belfast fino al centro cittadino nell’ultima di una serie di marce compiute per evidenziare le cause dei prigionieri.

Protest by dissident republicans at Maghaberry ends
A dispute between dissident republican prisoners and the authorities at Maghaberry jail has ended after talks.
At one stage, prison officers were offered protective clothing after having urine thrown at them.
A group of mediators, including trade union representatives, said the details of the outcome of the talks would remain confidential.
A statement said: “The discussions were underpinned by concern for prisoners’ rights and welfare, protecting prison officer safety, and maintaining the high security of Maghaberry Prison.
“This dialogue has resulted in a positive outcome and agreement to enable the protest at Roe House to end.”
As well as the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, the mediation group included Creggan Enterprises from Londonderry and the Dialogue Advisory Group which is based in Amsterdam.
‘Difficult’
The outcome of the talks has been welcomed by the Justice Minister David Ford.
He said: “The welfare, safety and security of both staff and prisoners were central to the discussions and I’m pleased that an agreement has been reached which allows for revised arrangements and procedures, but in no way dilutes the security of the prison or those who work and live there.”
He added that it had been a “difficult process” and thanked facilitators for their efforts
He added: “I commend also the Roe House staff who in recent times have carried out their duties in a dignified and professional manner.
“A safe, secure and humane prison regime is at the heart of a ‘healthy prison’ and the full compliance of all parties with this agreement will lead to enduring stability.”
The dispute began on Easter Sunday when 28 dissident republican prisoners barricaded themselves inside the prison canteen and smashed toilets in their cells.
Last weekend, about 100 protestors marched from west Belfast into the centre of the city in the latest in a series of marches to highlight the prisoners’ cause.
